The institution of Docent has existed since the 19th century and evolved from the entitlement given to academics who had earned their doctoral degree. The title Docent gives the right to publicly dispute and privately teach with the consent of the Dean and faculty (lat. venia docendi). A Docent is required to conduct research and must therefore possess both pedagogic and scientific competence.

Both rights and duties

Every Docent at Karolinska Institutet (KI) must be actively engaged in teaching and research at the KI. A docentur (i e, being a Docent, "docentship") at KI confers both rights and duties. Accordingly, a Docent at KI is entitled to conduct research at the university. KI, for its part, is entitled to demand that the Docent participates in teaching and other duties, including those of supervisor, examination board member and faculty opponent. A Docent may also be asked to write expert reports. This allows persons with no academic appointment to be affiliated with KI. A Docent's affiliation to the KI is valid for a period of six (6) years, which may be extended after re-evaluation. A salary raise of 3300 SEK is connected with becoming a Docent (provided that the Docent has an ongoing employment at KI).

Application for Docentur

A Docent at Karolinska Institutet is required to teach and conduct research and must therefore possess both pedagogic and scientific competence. Applications for docentur are assessed by the Docent Committee. New applications will be presented to the Docent Committee in order when they are submitted (and complete).

To become a Docent at the Karolinska Institutet (KI), an applicant must satisfy the prerequisites presented in the regulations for docentur at Karolinska Institutet.

Docentship applications should be submitted by e-mail to in the following order:

1. Cover sheet for docentship application (Swedish)

2. Qualifications portfolio/CV

N.B. Thesis and publications referred to in the qualifications portfolio must be linked to the publication database.

3. Recommendation from head of department

Including the subject area and a proposal for one internal and one external reviewer (both genders should be represented, unless there are particular reasons otherwise). In the recommendation, the head of department should also give his or her reasons for proposing the reviewers. (The reviewers should have been asked, and details should be included of any conflict of interests and full address and e-mail address.) The internal expert may not be from the applicant's institution.

Some of the cells in the table include comments. These are marked with a little red triangle in the top right corner. If you hover the cursor over the cell in the table, you can read the comment.

You should only fill in the yellow cells. As far as possible, try to complete the table with whole hours. If you enter half hours, you should use a comma (e.g. 2,5) and not a full stop.

If you need additional rows, position the cursor to the left of the row where you want to insert a row, right click and select ‘insert row above’ or ‘insert row below’.

The table will update totals continuously.

Save the table with your name before uploading it.

Pedagogical competence – a requirement in order to become a docent

Pedagogical courses

Docentship at KI requires at least the equivalent of 5 weeks of pedagogical education (research track and clinical research and development track) the teaching track requires 10 weeks.
Certification is required in order to have pedagogical courses approved. All pedagogical courses at LIME (Unit för Medical Education, UME) are approved. Other courses (such as courses in management) corresponding to a maximum of one week can also be approved. Each application will be assessed individually in its entirety.

The Karolinska Institutet University Library and the Centre for Learning and Knowledge (CLK) arrange free courses for teaching staff and employees at Karolinska Institutet within the fields of pedagogics and computer-supported learning. These courses constitute qualifications when applying for docentship. Information about courses offered can be found below.

Course offerings


Docentship at KI requires at least 120 hours of teaching. Teaching qualifications should include first-level education, but can also consist to a certain degree of third-cycle education and specialist education.

A number of different teaching forms should be included in the total teaching. Examples of different teaching forms include lectures, seminars, demonstrations, laboratory supervision, specially organised bedside teaching and tutoring within problem-based learning. Supervision of individual project work gives 1 hour per week per student (10 or 20 week projects).

Project supervision can make up a maximum of 40 hours of the total teaching quantity. A significant proportion of the teaching should have been carried out within the last six years. The majority of the teaching should be at KI, and the applicant should be able to document current teaching at KI.

An overview of teaching quantity is documented in table form regarding courses, student categories, teaching form and scope. The scope of teaching and the teaching table should be confirmed by the director of studies/course provider or equivalent.

Transferring docentship and changing subject area

From another Swedish higher educational institution

Applicants who are docents at another higher educational institution and who wish to transfer their docentship to KI should meet KI’s criteria for docentship in order for a transfer to be approved.

Applications should be submitted by e-mail to in the following order:

  1. Transfer form
  2. Copy of proof of docentship
  3. A recommendation from the head of department and subject certificate.
  4. Qualifications portfolio, using KI’s template
  5. Teaching table, using KI’s template
  6. LADOK extract for doctoral thesis

Changing subject area

In order to change docentship subject area, the applicant should have been active for at least three years within research and education and first- and second-cycle levels in the new docentship subject. Transferring from an experimental subject to a clinical subject requires a certified copy of proof of specialist expertise in the subject in question.

The Committe will assess and decide directly on almost all cases, such as changing from an experimental specialisation to a clinical specialisation within the same subject (most applicable for physicians), while in other cases an expert review will take place first.

The Docent Commitee

The Docent Committee assesses docentship applications.

The most important role of the Docent Committee is to assess whether newly received docentship applications are sufficient to be sent for expert review and to make a final assessment of applications once experts have given their review.

The Docent Committee decides whether applications is approved or rejected. There is no formal right to appeal the committee’s decisions.
