Research description
Annette Bruchfeld’s main research interests involve inflammatory kidney diseases, such as IgA nephropathy, and a more unusual group of autoimmune kidney diseases called ANCA-associated vasculitis. The aim of the research is to identify new biomarkers to help improve diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring.
Annette Bruchfeld is also involved in research on new treatment for kidney diseases, including more effective drugs with fewer side-effects aimed at kidney inflammation. The goal is to replace the more toxic immunosuppressant therapies used today and thereby reduce the burden of both the diseases and the treatment. One such drug is soon ready for licensing in Europe and the U.S. She is also researching how stimulation of the vagus nerve can be used as an anti-inflammatory treatment for kidney disease.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Annette Bruchfeld has been involved both as a researcher and a clinician in studying the vulnerability of people with kidney disease and advocating their priority for vaccination.
