About me

  • I am a researcher and teacher with more that 30 years of experience. My research is about treatment of antibody deficiencies and care of the patients and families. I am also performing research about nursing students’ and registered nurses’ self-reported competence. I have my PhD from Karolinska Institutet where I am an Associate Professor at the Department of Laboratory Medicine. I am also a Professor at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences.

Research

  • My main research interest concerns treatment of antibody deficiencies with immunoglobulins. I developed already late 1980’s and early 1990’s rapid subcutaneous infusions of immunoglobulins as replacement therapy. I also saw the possibility to educate and train the patients so that they could self-infuse at home instead of having to visit a hospital once per week. This meant a paradigm shift for the care and patients, and many studies by me and other researchers have shown how important self-treatment at home is for adult patients and children and their parents for an improved health-related quality of life. The subcutaneous infusion method and self-infusions at home is today the dominating therapy method in many countries. I am one of the founders of the International ‘Nursing Group for Immunodeficiencies’ (https://ingid.org).
I have also become interested in competence among nursing students and registered nurses and I am one of the researchers behind the often used ‘Nurse Professional Competence Scale” (https://npcresearchgroup.com).

Teaching

  • I enjoy teaching very much and I have been educating students and staff for 30 years about clinical immunology, primary immunodeficiencies and care of patients with these conditions.

I have been a supervisor for several PhD students.

At present I am supervising one PhD student and one Master student. As a teacher I am responsible for teaching master students about research methods.
