My background is in public health science with a specialization in health promotion, including tobacco control and physical activity. I have in-depth knowledge in health economics, policy and management from my studies and practical experience in promoting health in various target groups. In my PhD thesis I explored and evaluated Tobacco Cessation on Prescription as a primary healthcare intervention with a focus on socioeconomically disadvantaged areas in Stockholm. At the moment I am working as a coordinator in a research project that aims to evaluate the implementation of this intervention at participating units in primary healthcare in Region Stockholm with a focus on patients with mental ill-health or risk of mental ill-health.
The prevalence of tobacco use is higher among vulnerable groups, which contributes to inequalities in health. National guidelines for tobacco cessation treatment recommend that all daily smokers in high-risk groups, including those with a lower socioeconomic status and mental illness, should be offered treatment for tobacco cessation. However, relatively few patients in primary healthcare are identified as daily tobacco users and are offered support to quit their tobacco use.
Tobacco Cessation on Prescription is a new treatment method that is based on the results from an interview study, on The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare's guidelines for tobacco cessation treatment and on the treatment method Physical Activity on Prescription. Tobacco Cessation on Prescription consists of tobacco cessation counseling for a minimum of ten minutes, an individualized prescription for tobacco cessation treatment and follow-up on at least one occasion. In my research I have explored how healthcare providers and patients perceive Tobacco Cessation on Prescription and evaluated whether more patients manage to quit their tobacco use with Tobacco Cessation on Prescription compared to standard treatment for tobacco cessation. Currently I am researching the implementation of this intervention in primary healthcare in Region Stockholm.
