Research

  • Caroline Nordenvall works as a colorectal surgeon in Colorectal cancer, Theme Cancer, Karolinska University Hospital. Nordenvall began research at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, KI, 2002 and defended his thesis on risk factors for colorectal and anal cancer in 2010. She then joined the research group in Colorectal Surgery at MMK and has continued her research funded by, among others, two fellowships (SSMF, Ihre Fellowship) and clinical research position (Region Stockholm). Her areas of focus are surgical treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer. She thinks it´s incredible stimulating to combine research and clinic and is always curious on new projects.

  • *IBD*
Through national and international epidemiological studies, Nordenvall has studied the surgical treatment of patients with IBD. Her research have shown, among other things, that less than half of patients who have had colectomy undergoing reconstructive surgery, which has resulted in the CRUISE study (Colectomy and Reconstruction in Ulverative colitis in Sweden and England study) for which Nordenvall is the PI. The CRUISE study is a multicenter study in collaboration with Linköping, Gothenburg, St Marks Hospital and University Hospitals Birmingham. The aim of the study is to for the first time prospecitvely compare two different surgical methods in reconstructive surgery (ileorectal anastomosis and pelvic reservoir). In collaboration with docent Jenny Mjösberg the CIM-IBD study with immunological analyzes of IBD resectates is conducting. Nordenvall is also a member of the steering group for SWIBREG and Stockholms representative of the National Working Group for IBD (NAG-IBD).

  • *Colorectal Cancer*
The other area of interest is colorectal cancer. Nordenvall conducts clinical studies on advanced colon cancer, anal cancer and the sequel after rectal cancer treatment. In addition, she is on the steering committee for CRCBaSe (colorectal cancer quality registry linked to national registries) and conducts registry-based studies within megalinking https://cancercentrum.se/samverkan/cancerdiagnoser/tjocktarm-andtarm-och-anal/tjock--och-andtarm/kvalitetsregister/forskning/forskningsdatabas/.
[1] Since two years ago, translational studies have been conducted on patients with colon cancer and metastatic colorectal cancer where the aim is to study the impact of the immune system on disease, treatment response and prognosis.
