About me

  • I have a PhD in Periodontology and Clinical Chemistry obtained in May 1999 at
    the Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. My thesis is entitled “Hyperreactive
    neutrophils: A mechanism of tissue destruction in periodontitis”. Since
    then, I have dedicated my career to studying the systemic impact of
    Periodontal Disease. I started my docent career in 1999 at the Faculty of
    Odontology of Rio de Janeiro State University (FOUERJ) in Brazil. I held the
    position of Dean of Research at the same University from 2010 to 2018. I have
    had continuous funding grants from the Brazilian National Council for
    Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), Brazilian Federal Agency for
    Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES), and Carlos Chagas Filho
    Foundation for Research Support of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ). I
    have published six book chapters and more than 80 papers in peer-reviewed
    journals. I currently hold the Professor in Periodontics position at Griffith
    University, Australia.
