About me

  • Caroline Barner works at Capio St Görans hospital in Stockholm as a specialist in internal medicine and endocrinology. She studied medicine in Freiburg and Köln, Germany and worked in Switzerland during her graduate studies which she completed in 1997. She then commenced the mandatory 18 months internship (AIP) in Regensburg, Germany, followed by postgraduate training in internal medicine and nephrology at the department of internal medicine II and Kliniken im Altmühltal, Kösching. In 2005 she received her specialist degree in internal medicine and moved to Sweden with her family in 2006. After learning the language and establishing her family in Sweden, she started working at Capio Sankt Gorans hospital. Since 2013 she is the designated institutional official for the hospital`s residency programs, organizing the leadership and development program for residents and supervisor courses. Caroline has a MSc clinical education (University of Edinburgh 2022) and has implemented the new introducing part of residency (BT) in the region of Stockholm in her role as project lead 2020 - 2022.

Research

  • Caroline began her researcher career during her medical studies in Freiburg, Germany and obtained her doctor of medicine in 1999. Her dissertation was on elucidating mutations i families with hereditary protein C defects, enabling preventive measures for those carrying the mutation. After she had finished her practical year in Basel, Schweiz and Cologne, Germany, she continued to work as a physician at Regensburg University hospital from 1997. She received a stipendium for research at the department of physiology in 2001 - 2002 to characterize the renin-angiotensin-system in the kidney. Although still intrigued by preclinical research Caroline has since then been interested in clinical and educational research which directly benefits patients. In a rapidly changing world of medical advances doctors need to keep up to date in increasingly specialized areas and at the same time stay in touch with their patients, treating them holistically. She wants to find out how the changes in the education system for physicians influence students` learning and the impact that might have on clinical working environments.
