Duncan Njenda

Postdoctoral researcher

I am molecular virologist whose current research focus is on HIV drug resistance and viral evolutionary dynamics.

About me

I was born and raised in Zimbabwe and did much of my tertiary education in South Africa. I arrived at Karolinska Institutet in May 2016 and continued with my doctoral studies that are a joint Ph.D. program between Karolinska Institutet, Sweden and Stellenbosch University, South Africa. My research interests are focused towards infectious diseases and the public health concerns around them. I enjoy innovative challenges that stimulate critical thinking as well as working in a diverse and interactive research environment.

Research description

My Ph.D. project focuses on investigating the mechanisms of HIV-1 drug resistance to current and upcoming antiretroviral drugs. Using molecular and virological-based techniques my Ph.d project aims to elucidate the drug resistance profiles on HIV-1 non-B subtypes that dominate the HIV-1 pandemic and specifically affect low-and-middle income countries.  The overall goal is to make contributions that will help in the management of HIV-1 infected patients that are treated with antiretroviral drugs.
