Research

  • My research activity is based on the scientific collaboration between the Division of Clinical Geriatrics, Center for Alzheimer Research, Karolinska Institute and Karolinska University Hospital, Medical Unit Aging, Stockholm, Sweden

  • the Finnish Institute of Health and Welfare, Helsinki, Finland
  • and the Department of Neurology, University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio, Finland.My research focuses on early detection and prevention of late-life cognitive impairment, Alzheimer´s disease and dementia via multidomain interventions. I am interested in biological aspects on age-related cognitive impairment, with focus on blood-based markers of neurodegeneration, inflammation, oxidative/nitrosative stress, lipid and glucose metabolism. I also work on factors that can mediate the clinical expression of neuropathology and related biomarkers. From a clinical trial perspective my focus in on modifiable mediators such as mental stimulation.I am part of the Nordic Brain Network, an international and multidisciplinary research group and collaborative forum lead by Prof. Miia Kivipelto. I am the Executive Director of the World-Wide FINGERS Global Scientific Coordinating Center at the FINGERS Brain Health Institute, providing clinical coordination to the World-Wide FINGERS global Network of multidomain trials for dementia risk reduction and prevention.
