About me

I am since 2010 chairman of the division of pediatric dentistry at the department of Dental medicine. We are responsible for undergraduate education in pediatric dentistry for both dental and dental hygiene students. We also have a program for postgraduate education in pediatric dentistry (only in Swedish language) at the moment five dentists are enrolled. We are responsible for general dental care for 3 400 children and adolescents and receive about 700 referrals for specialist care every year. Research is focused on clinical pediatric dentistry and six PhD students are registered.

I have been employed at Karolinska Institutet since 1982. My major contribution is as course director for the course in pediatric dentistry from 1987 to 2010. During this time I have also worked clinically as a consultant in pediatric dentistry.

During 2008-2012 I was an elected member of the board of education at Karolinska Institutet with responsibility of pedagogical development of academic staff. I took initiative to the establishment of the Pedagogical academy at Karolinska Institutet in 2010. I am also a member of the Recruitment committee since 2008.

Research description

Research at the department is focused on clinical aspects of pediatric dentistry and comprises four different areas. We run projects in cooperation with the public dental service in Stockholm county regarding prevention of dental caries in preschool children from disadvantaged areas. We also try to develop evidence-based methods for treatment of dental phobia. A current project is an internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy program for treatment of dental phobia in children. A third area is prevention of oral diseases in children with chronic health conditions. A fourth area of competence is qualitative methods in oral health care.

Education

I was awarded DDS from Karolinska Institutet in 1979, PhD in 1986 and received a specialist certificate in pediatric dentistry also in 1986. I became associate professor (docent) in 1989 and professor in 1998.
