About me

  • Professor of Pharmacology at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology since 2002.

Research

  • Kynurenic acid is normally found in low concentrations in the brain. Its functions are thought to include the regulation of glutamate, an important signal substance, which it achieves by blocking brain glutamate receptors.

It has previously been shown that substances with this property can induce symptoms that are typical of schizophrenia. According to a recently proposed hypothesis, the kynurenic acid that is produced after activation of the brain's immune system plays an important part in the development of the disease.
