Harriet Wallberg, MD, PhD is a Professor of Physiology and was the President (Vice-Chancellor) of Karolinska Institutet during the years 2004-2012.

Professor Wallberg earned her medical and doctoral degrees at Karolinska Institutet. In 1998, she was appointed Professor of Physiology and from 1999 to 2001 she served as the university’s Dean of Research. She has served as the Secretary General of the Scientific Council for Medicine at the Swedish Research Council, and as University Chancellor and Head of the Swedish Higher Education Authority.

Since 2004, she has been a member of the Tokyo-based international Science and Technology in Society Forum (STS). She has served as a member of the International Scientific Advisory Council to the government of Singapore, a member of the Research Advisory Council to the Danish Government, and a member of the Max Planck Senate. She has also served as a member of the Swedish Government's Science Policy Council, and of the Swedish Globalization Council. She has previously been appointed by the government to lead Swedish delegations to the UN and to represent Sweden on the boards of the European Science Foundation and the World Health Organization’s Agency for Cancer Research, among other prominent assignments. 

Professor Wallberg has been awarded with honorary doctorates from several international universities, as well as the Order of the Rising Sun from the Japanese Government. In 2008, Professor Wallberg was honored with H. M. the King’s Medal for her distinguished achievements in medical education and research. She is also a member of the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet, which each year selects the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine.
