Juan Jesus Carrero
I serve as professor in cardio-renal Epidemiology at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) and lektor at Örebro University, School of Medicine . My professional ambition is to improve the prevention and management of persons with chronic kidney disease, and to integrate kidney function assessment into the medical decision process.
Since my arrival at KI, I have authored more than 300 articles as well as 25 book chapters on epidemics and complications of chronic kidney disease, with special emphasis on modifiable risk factors: diet, lifestyle and inapropriate use of medication. My work has received over 10 000 citations and my H index is currently 52 according to Web of Science. I am a frequent invited lecturer to national and international scientific conferences worldwide.

My long term goal is to improve patient care by integrating kidney function aspects in the medical decision process.
To that end we pursue clinical epidemiological analyses in National and International population-based and healthcare-related registers. These include, among others:
- The Swedish Renal Registry
- The Uppsala Longitudinal Study of Adult Men
- The Prospective Investigation of vasculature in Uppsala Seniors
- The Swedish Mammography Cohort
- The Swedish cohort of men
- The Swedish Twin Register
- The National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan
- Cohorts within the CKD-prognosis consortium
- The Global Burden of Disease consortium
- The Diet-Hemodialysis study
- Manitoba Healthcare system, Canada
- The ERA-EDTA register
In addition, we coordinate the unique Stockholm CREAtinine Measurements (SCREAM) project.
SCREAM is a complete healthcare utilisation cohort of Stockholm residents. SCREAM has been made possible by agreements with Stockhom County Council and the main laboratory service providers of our region (Unilabs, Karolinska and Aleris), which together run the vast majority of laboratory analyses of the County.
Included are all resident of the region of Stockholm that underwent plasma creatinine or albuminuria testing in connection to a healthcare consultation.
- The first phase (period 2006-2011) includes 1.3 million adults (68% of the population census for that period).
- The second phase (period 2006-2018) is currently under construction.
Together with kidney function estimates, a wide range of laboratory measurements is also available. Laboratory data was thereafter linked with variety of Regional and National Health Care Registers to conform the largest and most comprehensive healthcare utilisation cohort of Sweden.
SCREAM is coupled with practical implementation program within Stockholm Healthcare (Stockholm Läns Landsting, SLL) aimed at raising awareness among prescribers of the importance of kidney dysfunction and drug interactions.
SCREAM receives and/or has received financial suport from the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskåpsrådet), Stockholm Healthcare, Swedish Heart and Lung Foundation, Westman Foundation, Martin Rind's Foundation and the US National Institutes of Health (NIH)
We welcome research collaborations. Please, do contact us if you share our fascination for cardiorenal epidemiology research
