Research description

We are studying the effects of using smartphone applications (apps) as complements to standard treatment for alcohol dependence and are also aiming to validate the apps as means of reporting consumption.

The doctoral project thus entails a large randomized controlled trial, a validation study and a qualitative study, and participants are recruited at Riddargatan 1 - the clinic for alcohol and health.

The significance of the project is three-fold: First, there is an abundance of health apps on the market but very few have been evaluated scientifically. Second, data on alcohol consumption is usually collected in retrospect, so finding novel ways to collect accurate data is crucial. Third, alcohol use causes significant morbidity and mortality. Using apps has the potential to increase the availability and accessibility of care, and thereby reducing the burden of alcohol-related disease and disability.
