Katrine De Angeles

PhD student

About me

I am a PhD student in the Global Health, HIV and SRHR research group (GLoSH) within the department of Public Health Sciences at the Karolinska institutet.

The health of vulnerable groups especially maternal- and child health is my passion. With an interest in infectious disease epidemiology and health behaviour I strive to understand how individual and health systems factors' influence health outcomes, disease spread and health management.

Since 2013 I have been working on HIV-related projects in Europe and East Africa together with professor Anna Mia Ekström. Currently I am a PhD student, part of the WelTel research team exploring prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV in Kenya. My research explores the impact of an m-health intervention on different aspects of PMTCT through an RCT design, including retention to care. My research also explores the implementation of the Kenyan national defaulter tracing programe for PMTCT at different health facilities in Western Kenya.

As a reseracher I strongly promote the the use of social and behavioral studies in combination with sound epidemiological data to ensure the creation of evidence-informed health policies. Policies that promotes health equity and enables access for all.

In previous years I have been involved in advocay and policy formulation on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). I have also worked with patient-management of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and cancer for the pharmaceutical industry. In the future I aspire to become a specialist in disease control and prevention at programme management level and dedicate myself to the field of social medicine.
