Anders Gustafsson, DDS, PhD is a Professor of Periodontology at the Department of Dental Medicine and Dean of Research. He earned his dental and doctoral degrees at Karolinska Institutet, and was appointed professor in 2005 when he also became head of the unit for Periodontology and Dental Hygiene.
Anders Gustafsson's main research focus is on the pathogenesis of periodontitis and the association between periodontitis and systemic diseases, primarily cardiovascular disease and diabetes. He has authored more than 70 scientific articles within the fields of periodontology and inflammation. Professor Gustafsson has been teaching undergraduate students in the dental and dental hygiene programmes for more than 25 years and has supervised numerous undergraduate, masters and PhD students.
Between the years 2008 and 2011, Anders Gustafsson was Pro-Dean of Doctoral Education. In Januaru 2012 he was appointed Dean of Doctoral Education, and in July 2016 he became Dean of Research.
As Dean of Research, Anders Gustafsson is chair of Karolinska Institutet's Board of Research, which has overall responsibility for the following:
- Ensuring that the research at Karolinska Institutet is given the best possible conditions for further development.
- Ensuring that the university's management and incentive systems lead toward the accomplishment of the university’s ambitious research goals.
- Strategically recruiting top national and international performers, and securing growth by investing in young scientists.
- Recruiting teachers (professors and lecturers) in collaboration with the Boards of Higher Education and Doctoral Education.
