Dr. Nikos Mattheos was born in Athens in 1973. He has Greek and Australian citizenship. He graduated from the Dental Faculty, University of Athens in 1996. He worked as a general dentist in private practice and received Medical Officers training in the Hellenic Air Force. He then attended residency training in Periodontology in the University of Malmo, Sweden, where he completed his MSc and PhD Thesis. He continued with a 3-year residency programme in Implant Dentistry and Fixed Prosthodontics in the university of Bern, Switzerland.
As Associate Professor of Periodontology in Griffith University, Australia, he developed and directed the MSc in Implant Dentistry Programme. Between 2012-2019 he served as Associate Professor of Implant Dentistry in the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Hong Kong, where he was active with teaching, research and patient care and served in various academic roles and positions.
He is currently the Academic and Clinical Director of the Centre for Dental Education in Hong Kong and active in private practice, while maintaining a visiting Professorship in Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) and affiliated with Karolinska Institute (Sweden). He is registered specialist Periodontist in Sweden and other EU countries and accredited by the European Federation of Periodontology.
His research has been disseminated through more than 110 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and several abstracts and keynote lectures in major international congresses. He has an h-index of 30 (Google Scholar) or 22 (Scopus) and more than 2900 citations. He has served as Associate Editor of the European Journal of Dental Education (2005-2020) and currently the International Journal of Prosthodontics. He is member of the Editorial Board of Clinical Oral Implants Research and International Journal of Oral Implantology. His main research areas involve: a) Biological research (peri-implant tissues in health and disease and guided bone regeneration, b) Behavioural research and Patients Reported Outcomes Measures (PROMS) in Implant Therapy c) Clinical research (clinical outcomes of implant therapy) d) Implant Design and Technical research (geometry and micromorphology of implant abutment connection, implant surface modification) e) Information & Communication Technology, e-learning and application in Teaching and Learning .
He has designed, conducted and supervised in-vitro, animal and clinical studies. He has received several competitive research grants from governments in Sweden, Australia and Hong Kong, scientific bodies (ITI), as well as industry (Straumann, Dentsply, P&G). He is recipient of research awards among which is twice the IADR thematic research award (2003 educational research group, 2013 Implant Dentistry group) and the Andre Schroeder Prize in 2015.
Dr. Mattheos has delivered and assessed undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Periodontology and in Implant Dentistry, which cover or aspects of theoretical, practical and clinical teaching. His PhD dissertation assessed the effectiveness of on-line learning environments for the delivery of Problem Based Learning in Dentistry.
His main academic teaching domain is the postgraduate Implant Dentistry, where he has served as Programme Director of postgraduate Implant Dentistry programmes In Australia and Hong Kong. His duties included curriculum and assessment design, teaching in seminars, didactic and PBL sessions, clinical supervision, research mentoring, development and execution of on-line teaching modules. He served as Associate Dean for Taught Postgraduate Education (2015-2017). He has received several teaching and learning grants in Sweden, Australia and Hong Kong for the development of teaching innovations and educational research.
As Associate Editor for the European Journal of Dental Education, he was widely acknowledged for promoting the scholarship of teaching and learning with focus of expertise in the areas of on-line education, curriculum development and assessment. His leadership has been instrumental in the development of global guidelines for the teaching and assessment of Implant Dentistry, having organised 2 global consensus workshops in 2008 and 2013, while he has contributed to several other international consortia for the improvement of teaching and learning.
He is a member of the Educational Committee of the International Team for Implantology, a scientific and professional body that oversees the education and development of more than 17,000 members worldwide. In past directing positions in Australia, he designed an advanced curriculum for undergraduate and post graduate education in Implant Dentistry through a competitive federal government 2-year grant, including the country’s first Master’s programme in Implant Dentistry. he designed and directed (2010-2012) the Master of Clinical Dentistry in Implant Dentistry program of Griffith University, which consisted of 20 thematic modules over a period of 2 years, including supervised clinical practice, PBL blended learning sessions, scientific literature seminars and on-line mentorship.
In 2016 he launched and directed the first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in Implant Dentistry, in the University of Hong Kong . The MOOC has achieved exceptionally high engagement by all metrics, as documented by a recently published research paper in Eur J Dent Educ. In addition, the course achieved an extraordinarily high percentage of certificate acquisition. The MOOC has as of today enrolled more than 30,000 and received a Honorable Mention in the 2017 Greater China MOOC awards among more than 100 contestants in the category of Course Design and Quality.
