Chinese CSC scholarship applicants

The KI-CSC programme is based on an agreement between KI and the China Scholarship Council, CSC, which awards scholarships to Chinese scholars going abroad for studies or research. KI only accepts applicants within the KI-CSC programme.

Doctoral degree - timeline and process 

From November to March the following year, matchmaking

From November to March the following year, you should identify a potential KI supervisor according to your research interests from the list of offered research projects that can be conducted at KI published at the KI-CSC website. The list contains a description of the available research projects together with the names of the prospective hosts/PhD supervisors and their e-mail addresses. When you identify a project of interest for you, make contact in order to investigate whether there exists the personal and professional match as the basis of working together. Take an online interview or a visit to KI to sort this out.

Note: KI hosts/supervisors not on the list are not available as hosts for students in the respective year. In other words, KI will not accept additional applicants outside the KI-CSC programme, i.e., through the open calls of the CSC scholarship programmes.

Before mid March 2022, prepare application to CSC

If mutual agreement is reached between you and a potential supervisor, the KI host will provide you with the documents needed for your application to CSC. Please also check detailed instructions on the CSC website. The documents needed for your application to CSC are:

  • A detailed research plan for the doctoral training (usually 2-4 pages), dated and signed by the supervisor.
  • A dated and signed CV from the supervisor at KI. 
  • Please note that you need to provide the KI supervisor with the template for the research plan and the curriculum vitae as required from CSC.
  •  A letter of invitation on the KI template provided by the supervisor. Importantly, the invitation letter will be co-signed by the head of department to certify your visit. CSC will only consider applicants with invitation letters included in the official KI endorsement list. The letter is issued preconditioned of your successful application for a CSC scholarship equally as fulfilling the requirements of Karolinska Institutet for entry into the 4-year PhD program (which includes passing the eligibility test to enter doctoral studies as well as successful admittance to the 4-year doctoral study).

March 10-31 submit online application to CSC 

March 10-31 you should submit the online application for CSC scholarship for the KI-CSC programme. The application for a CSC scholarship includes two parts, an online application and  a hardcopy application.

​​​​Upon completion of the online application, you submit the hardcopy application, including all required documents, to your home university/institution for institutional endorsement/recommendation. For endorsement of applicants by KI, an official list of the applicants is made based on the invitation letters sent to KI International Relations Office. The list of endorsed applicants is sent to CSC. Only applicants that have been endorsed by KI will be considered by CSC.

After going through the institutional endorsement procedures, the home universities/institutions will mail the hardcopy applications to CSC in April. The complete application (both online and hardcopy application) and applicant’s home university/institution approval, both in electronic format and hard copies, should reach CSC office by April 15, 2022.
Hence, it is highly recommendable that you complete the online application and proceed to institutional endorsement early.

Prospective doctoral students undertaking education to obtain a master’s degree in Sweden, submit their application through the Education Section of the Chinese Embassy in Stockholm.

Submit your complete online application for CSC scholarships at the CSC website, under the category of CSC-KI collaborative project (国家留学基金委与卡罗林斯卡医学院合作项目) including;

  • the letter of invitation
  • a research plan, dated and signed by the supervisor
  • the CV of the supervisor, 1-2 pages, dated and signed by the supervisor.

April - May 2022, selection of candidates by CSC

CSC organises independent evaluations of all submitted applications during April - May. CSC informs the applicants’ home university/institution as well as KI, of the outcome of the applications in late May. KI International Relations Office informs KI supervisors/hosts of the outcome of CSC scholarship applications upon receiving the notifications from CSC. More information for Chinese citizens and residents to study abroad with a CSC sponsorship can be found at the CSC website. The KI host and you  plan the research project at KI together. When the decision has been taken and the KI supervisor is informed, the KI supervisor will send you a letter with further instructions on how to proceed.

Admission, general and specific entry requirements at KI for 4-year doctoral education

General eligibility

A prospective doctoral student meets the general entry requirement for doctoral education if he or she:

  • has been awarded a degree at advanced university level (equivalent to second cycle in Sweden, master’s degree) or,

  • has satisfied the requirements for courses, at university level, comprising at least 240 credits (ECTS), corresponding to four years of academic studies, of which at least 60 credits (ECTS), one academic year, were awarded at the second cycle level, or

  • has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits (ECTS) of which at least 60 credits (ECTS) were awarded at advanced level, or
  • has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Specific eligibility (English language requirements)

All prospective doctoral students must show proficiency in English. Admission process

To be admitted to doctoral studies at KI, the candidate must:

  • Apply for an assessment of eligibility at KI, as soon as possible after receiving notice of an awarded scholarship.
  • Apply for admittance to doctoral studies at KI, once eligibility is established and an Eligibility Statement has been issued, following the instructions for Admission procedure in the case of exemption from the announcement requirement 
  • Apply for a student visa, after being admitted to doctoral studies at KI.

Post-doctoral education, visiting researcher or visiting doctoral - process and timeline

You should

  • Identify a potential KI supervisor according to your research interests from the list of KI hosts published at CSC website. The list contains the description of research projects, the prospective hosts’ names and email addresses.
  • When you find a project of interest, make contact in order to investigate whether there exists a professional and personal match as the basis of working together. The potential KI mentor works out, in collaboration with you, the research plan for the postdoctoral training, and visiting scholars’ research at KI.

  • A letter of invitation invitation provided by the supervisor using KI:s template. The invitation letter will be co-signed by the head of department and a copy of the letter of invitation must be sent to KI international office for documentation and for KI’s endorsement to CSC. CSC will only consider applicants with invitation letters included in the official KI endorsement list.  
    • If you are a visiting PhD student who is already are admitted for doctoral studies at a Chinese university, there is no official eligibility assessment.

    • If you, as a prospective visiting researcher, are currently employed, it is important that you obtain an approval from your employer for the application for CSC scholarships before setting up an application with a KI host.

    • CSC only accepts post-doc scholarship application approved by the Chinese employer of the applicant. Unemployed applicants without an employment will not be considered for a post-doc scholarship application.

    • Top-up of the CSC scholarship by your host at KI is compulsory for postdocs but not for visiting scholars (visiting researchers and visiting doctoral students).

English proficiency requirement by CSC

CSC requires a qualified English proficiency score of the scholarship awardees. English proficiency tests recognised by CSC include PETS-5 (全国外语水平考试, WSK), TOEFL, and IELTS.
