Video for teaching now in Canvas Studio
The My Media and Media Gallery features in Canvas, which use Kaltura to store video and audio in your Canvas courses, will be discontinued. Starting 8 December, it will no longer be possible to upload new videos to My Media and Media Gallery. You will still be able to view your videos via My Media and Media Gallery in your Canvas course. To continue working with educational videos and audio files in Canvas, please use Canvas Studio going forward.
Migration of video material
On 8 December, the migration (copying) of films from Kaltura to Canvas will begin. All educational films in My Media and Media Gallery will be copied to the owner's personal library in Canvas Studio.
Films embedded from My Media or Media Gallery in Canvas pages, assignments, quizzes or other course content are also copied to the owner's personal library in Canvas Studio. In step two of the project, links to the old Kaltura films will be replaced with links to the same films that have been moved to Canvas Studio.
Films published in Media Gallery are also copied to the owner's personal library, as Canvas Studio does not have a corresponding function for Media Gallery, i.e. displaying a collection of films per course for students. We hope that this option will also be available in Canvas Studio in spring 2026. In the meantime, you can create pages with embedded films if you want to create playlists.
The copying process is expected to take at least four weeks, and the time it takes for the material to appear in users' Studio libraries may be affected by technical factors. Once the copying is complete, the next step in the project, replacing links, will begin. See the detailed description below.
The migration does not include:
- Kaltura Interactive Video Quiz. You can create new interactive quizzes in Canvas Studio.
- Videos recorded with Kaltura Capture that contain two video streams.
(Canvas Studio cannot handle two simultaneous image streams; such recordings are split into two separate films if they are migrated.) - Films published on the external service KI Play are not affected by the migration and will continue to function until further notice. In the long term, we recommend that films published via KI Play and used in your teaching via Canvas be moved to Canvas Studio.
Good to know
- Canvas Studio has a file size limit of 10 GB per file. If your file in Kaltura is larger than 10 GB, it will not be migrated to Canvas Studio. If you have a media file larger than 10 GB, please contact KI's ICT support for guidance.
Timeline for decommissioning and migration
8 December 2025 – Discontinuation of uploads to My Media and Media Gallery
After this date, it will no longer be possible to upload new video or audio material to Kaltura in Canvas. From now on, users should upload all new material directly to Canvas Studio.
8 December 2025 – January 2026 – Copying of existing films
The migration project will start on 12 December.
Films will be copied for at least four weeks.
Mid to late January 2026 – Studio library check
Once the copy is complete, users can start checking their Studio libraries to verify that they can see their films. These dates are preliminary and may be affected if unforeseen technical issues arise.
February 2026 – replacement of old links
Canvas (Instructure) is working on a Search and Replace feature that will automatically replace old Kaltura embeds in all Canvas courses with the new videos in Canvas Studio.
Impact on local course material
- Videos that have been published locally in Canvas courses are not affected by this transition. These videos can be found under "Files" in the course and are not linked to Kaltura.
- To verify the source of a video in Canvas, follow the instructions on this page.
- A step-by-step guide for how you, as a user, can manage the migrated material will be made available here as soon as the provider has given the necessary information about the post-migration setup
Keep this in mind when uploading video to Canvas Studio
- When uploading material to Canvas Studio, share your material with relevant parties who need access to work on subtitles, if necessary.
- To facilitate the identification and management of videos, we encourage teachers to change the thumbnail image after uploading material to Studio. Instructions for this can be found here: M2.9 Replace thumbnail image and recommendations for publication.

Teachers who have previously used Kaltura (My Media/Media Gallery) for student submissions need to inform their students about this change. This is especially important in courses where students have been asked to record or upload video as part of their assignments. Students can access guides for Canvas Studio through the Canvas Student Guide, available via the Help menu in Canvas.
