Manual - VPN for Android
When working remotely, you can connect via our Virtual Private Network (VPN) to access KI’s private network and internal resources – such as, shared folders on a file server (public folders). Read more about how to set up the VPN on your Android phone.
Installing the VPN client
To be able to use the VPN service you need first to download and install a VPN client.
Go to Google Play and search for the app "Cisco AnyConnect".
Install the app and open it.
Create a new access profile by clicking Advanced Preferences and add the server address vpn.ki.se.
Enter your mobile telephone number in KIMKAT
You login to VPN via two steps:
- Username and password (your KI ID)
- A one-time code is generated in the PointSharp App
In order for you to get the activation code and the download code for the app in your mobile, you will need to enter your mobile telephone number in KIMKAT (if it isn’t in there already there). You need to be connected to KI’s network to be able to reach KIMKAT.
Verify/enter in your mobile telephone number
We want you to verify that the correct mobile telephone number is registered:
- Go in to http://kims.ki.se/kims/faces/start.xhtml and select “Review visible details”
- Go to “KI mobile phone”
- Select “Add Phone” and enter your mobile number according to 07x xx xxx xx.
- Click “Review changes” and confirm.
Even though it’s called “Review visible details,” your mobile phone number will not appear on your profile page on the website.
For more information about how to get the activation code and download link for the app to your mobile, visit Questions and Answers about VPN, the section “4. First login with two-step verification.”
Once you have entered your mobile telephone number, you need to wait until the next day before you can proceed with the installation of the VPN.
When the VPN client is installed and profile created and you are ready to access KI you start the VPN client.
To connect you slide the button AnyConnect VPN.
You log in with your KI login, same as for your email account.
Two factor authentication
Once you have logged in according with your KI ID, you will be asked to enter the one-time code.
Two factor authentication – installation and activation
The first time you log in to the VPN you will receive a text message with the activation code.
Click on the link you received via the text message to download the PointSharp App in Google Play.
Example of text message:
Start the app and fill in the activation code specified in the instruction you got.
Note: Each code that PointSharp generates is time-limited. Downloading, installing and activating the app may take longer than the code is active, which may make your first attempt to fail. Restart the login with your username and password, and then click the update symbol in the PointSharp App to get a new login code.
In the future, you will need to start PointSharp every time you log in to the VPN, after you have identified yourself with your username and password.
Enter the code that the app generates in the VPN client.
Once you have entered the correct login code, you should be connected. Here’s how it looks when you’re connected:
Since VPN encrypts all data traffic it is fragile. This means that if you for example use your mobile phone for connecting to internet it might not work very well.
