Quality work of the Infrastructure Board
The rapid development of research methods and technologies requires Karolinska Institutet’s research infrastructure to be continuously improved and evaluated to remain relevant and effective. This page describes the Infrastructure Board’s quality assurance processes, the follow‑up of funded activities, and the evaluation of KI’s infrastructure portfolio.
In 2024, the Infrastructure Board initiated strategic work to ensure access to research infrastructure of the highest quality, relevance and excellence for KI researchers, both where there is a widespread need (breadth) and where the need is more limited to certain research areas (cutting edge).
Four focus areas
Identifying the researchers’ needs
This area is the basis of the Board’s work. The Board aims to conduct systematic activities that include seeking guidance from an International Advisory Board, engaging in dialogue with KI’s faculty bodies and line organisation through open meetings, distributing user surveys, and holding open forums for discussion with researchers.
Researchers’ access to research infrastructure
The Board will work to facilitate researchers’ access to KI’s research infrastructure, both regional (particularly at the interface with healthcare) and national. Within this focus area, the Board plans to develop processes for the allocation of operational funding to KI’s core facilities, strengthen coordination between the facilities, and enhance KI’s participation in national infrastructures. Data management and data storage initiatives are considered especially important.
Conditions for the operation of research infrastructure
The Board seeks to promote coordinated and tailored support in areas such as IT, finance, legal services, and communication.
Follow‑up of actions
The Infrastructure Board prioritises unified and systematic governance routines, as well as steering documents that describe KI’s quality system for research infrastructure. This work aims to strengthen KI’s position as a leading research university and ensure that researchers have the tools and resources necessary to continue conducting high‑quality research.
