To apply for promotion from Assistant Professor to Senior Lecturer

If you are employed as Assistant Professor (sv: biträdande lektor) at KI, you have the right to be promoted to Senior Lecturer if you
1. are eligible for such employment as Senior Lecturer
2. after an assessment are deemed suitable in accordance with KI’s assessment criteria for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Please note that employees with the old title Assistant professor (forskarassistent in Swedish) does not have the possibility to apply for promotion. Assistant professor (forskarassistent) is a temporary position without possibility to promotion.

Application process

Step 1.

Contact the Competence Provision Unit in the HR Office to inform them that you are interested in applying for a promotion by emailing  academic-appointments@ki.se

Step 2

An HR Specialist at the Unit will send you a link to the recruitment system where you later will upload your application. Please note that you have to submit your application at least 9 months before the end of your employment as Assistant Professor.

Assessment process

The Recruitment Committee processes and decides on matters regarding Professors and Senior Lecturers and thus also processes promotions from Assistant Professor to Senior Lecturer.

To be promoted to Senior Lecturer the Recruitment Committee will assess whether you meet the eligibility requirements and the assessment criteria for the employment of Senior Lecturer according to KI’s Instructions regarding appointments procedure for teachers. An assessment will also be made on whether you are suitable for such an employment according to the assessment criteria which KI has implemented for cases of promotion to Senior Lecturer.

When applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer you will choose between two promotion tracks: promotion to Senior Lecturer with focus on research or promotion to Senior Lecturer with focus on education and research. When applying for promotion the assessment criteria applied are those which were applied at the time of your employment as Assistant Professor. Current assessment criteria can be found in the Instructions regarding appointments procedure for teachers.

If you are deemed to meet all the assessment criteria that KI apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer you can then be assessed by two expert reviewers.

Decision

After the assessment process as well as the Recruitment Committee’s decision to recommend or advise against promotion, it is the Head of Department who makes the decision. In certain cases, the decision can be made by the President of KI.

Promotion from Assistant Professor to Senior Lecturer means a permanent employment as a Senior Lecturer.

Decision of refusal can be appealed to The Higher Education Appeals Board. More information regarding appeals can be found here.
