Saved Vacation Exchange to Pension

State collective agreements provide employees who are entitled to more than 20 paid vacation days per year the opportunity to save the excess days for a later year, with a cap of 30 saved days. KI believes it is important for employees to have the rest and recovery they need, which is the purpose of vacation days.
For employees who have saved vacation days, there is an option to exchange them for an occupational pension.

Exchanging saved vacation days for occupational pension can be arranged through an agreement between the employee and the employer, where the employer makes a one-time contribution to the occupational pension according to the pension agreement PA16. The employee who exchanges will receive an additional 4% of the exchanged amount.

All employees at Karolinska Institutet who work at least 20% are eligible for this opportunity. The exchange can be made up until the month before the employee turns 67 or 69 years old, depending on which collective agreement they are covered by. After a decision on vacation exchange, a binding agreement is signed. This agreement may be made several times per year; however, a new agreement is required each time.

Please note that vacation exchange only applies to saved vacation days.

It is not possible to reverse a completed vacation exchange.

Unorganized employees can contact their HR department at the institution if they are unsure which collective agreement they are covered by.

You can find the full terms and agreement under the "documents" section at the bottom of this page.
