Why does KI need Learning Analytics?

In KI's information management strategy, analyzing the (online) learning environments is one of ‎the focus areas. Teaching is going to be more digitized and Karolinska Institutet will build competence to be ‎able to use data on students' activities and achievements to adapt pedagogy in education and ‎communication with students.‎

At UoL, we think using educational data (collected on our educational platforms) could help teachers and programs support their students' learning and development.

Start of the project

We started with a literature search about learning analytics in higher education and contacted some Swedish universities about how they are using learning analytics in their education. We also participated in some online webinars and a conference at KTH. We gave a presentation for UoL in Spring 2023 about LA and how it can be used at KI. We also created a landing page on the KI website about this topic.

Then we investigated some commercial products like Octopusbi, Orzone, Edaider, QlikSense (used by SU), and Intelliboard. In these presentations, we asked them about the Curriculum Mapping component in their system. Curriculum mapping is a project focused on the Information Management Project which will have a system solution ready in 2-3 years (now Excel sheets are used to document learning outcomes against activities and examinations). After demonstrations, we chose Intelliboard (IB). After some negotiations, we got a lower price (12500 to 7500).

GDPR and ethical issues

It takes some time for the KI legal office to work on an agreement for the GDPR with IB.
