Safety Representatives at MTC
The safety representative’s role is to monitor protection against ill health and accidents and to ensure that the employer complies with the requirements of the Work Environment Act regarding systematic work environment management.
The safety representative shall, for example, inform the employer of any deficiencies in the work environment, be notified by the employer of significant changes that may affect the work environment (within the representative’s area), and be involved in the development of action plans (for example following inspections, employee surveys and other risk assessments). Safety representatives shall also be involved in incident reporting.
Under the Work Environment Act, safety representatives are granted a number of powers, and if you identify any shortcomings in the work environment, you can always turn to a safety representative for advice and support. They are bound by confidentiality.
