How we protect our networks and servers
Karolinska Institutet is using a web filter in order to secure our networks and servers from malware, such as viruses and trojans. This means that some websites cannot be reached when using the KI network.
KI is regularly exposed to cyber attacks which means that we risk losing valuable information, such as integrity protected data and research data. The web filter is a security measure in order to secure that no third party can access our data or that our systems are infected with malware.
The web filter blocks:
- sites that contain malware (viruses, trojans, ransomware etc.)
- high risk classified sites (as they spread viruses, have been hacked, are used for SPAM etc.)
- sites containing different types of attempted fraud (e.g. Phishing)
- sites selling illegal drugs
- sites with pornographic content
Note that the filter will not block search words but only websites according to the above.
Why are these pages being blocked?
The web filter blocks sites according to the list above, as it entails a risk to your computer and KI's IT systems to visit those sites.
At the service provider's website, you can get help with why a website is blocked by the web filter.
Exception from the web filter
If you in your research need to visit websites that are currently blocked by the web filter, you can apply for an exception. Register a helpdesk ticket at KI Self Service and we will make an assessment of which technical solution is best in your particular case.
Incorrect blocking
If a website is blocked on incorrect grounds, request a classification rating request directly with the provider at the following web pageto correct this. A successful change request usually propagates within 4-6 hours to our systems.
