25 years of collaboration for Global Health – KI and Makerere celebrate a milestone

Karolinska Institutet and Makerere University in Uganda are marking 25 years of joint efforts to improve health worldwide. The anniversary also highlights five years of the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health – a platform driving sustainable solutions and equitable partnerships.

Annika Östman Wernerson: We are now strengthening our collegial leadership

We are now in the throes of the autumn term – there is a lot going on and multiple important processes and projects are being conducted in parallel. On 15 October, the University Board made its decision on the future organisation of KI’s Faculty Board and committees, with the aim of creating a good balance between collegial and line organisational structures, clarifying roles and duties, and ultimately strengthening KI as a sustainable and successful university.

President decides on a new allocation model for government research funding

President Annika Östman Wernerson has taken decisions on further aspects of KI’s new model for the allocation of the government appropriation for research and doctoral education. The decisions concern performance-bases allocations and premises costs. The model will come into effect in its entirety in 2026, replacing the former “activity” model.

The summer offers a valuable opportunity for recuperation – without which it is a struggle to take on the challenges of the autumn with a sharp, engaged mind. I spent the holidays with family and friends in the Stockholm archipelago and in the Jämtland fells. Hiking and sitting down for a coffee on a sun-warmed rock provides time for reflection and re-energising ahead of a new term at Karolinska Institutet.

KI among the top universities in the THE ranking

When Times Higher Education (THE) in the UK publishes its ranking of the world's best universities regardless of specialisation, KI lands in 53rd place among more than 2,000 higher education institutions in 115 countries. In the EU, KI ranks 6th and is the foremost place among higher education institutions in the Nordic region.
