Annika Östman Wernerson: A year of progress, challenges and hope – thank you for 2025

After the Nobel week and the celebration of research that has been of greatest benefit to humankind, I feel nothing but immense gratitude and admiration for this year’s laureates. Particularly momentous was, of course, having the honour to present and listen to the Medicine laurates’ lectures in Aula Medica on 7 December.

KIB gets the new assignment to lead the development of KI's cultural activities

The University Library (KIB) has been asked by the president to lead the process and develop a unified cultural program at KI. The decision follows a review of cultural activities, in which the report confirms the importance of culture for KI as a whole.

More and closer cooperation when KIB becomes part of GVS

This coming new year, Karolinska Institutet University Library (KIB) will become part of Professional Services (GVS) at KI, creating more opportunities for closer cooperation and broader skills exchanges.

From 1 July 2026, the Karolinska Institutet University Library (KIB) will provide library services for Karolinska University Hospital.

Research abroad – apply for an SSF Sabbatical

The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, SSF, is allocating a total of SEK 44 million for SSF Sabbatical 2025. Each researcher can receive up to SEK 3 million during the period 2026-2029. Read more and send the application no later than 5 March 2026.

SEK 60 million for a new national graduate school for biomedical laboratory scientists

The Swedish Research Council is investing SEK 60 million in Sweden’s first graduate school for biomedical laboratory scientists, with Karolinska Institutet playing a central role. The initiative aims to strengthen the supply of expertise and meet healthcare’s need for research-trained biomedical laboratory scientists.

New car park operator and digital pay system on KI campuses

A digital system for parking permits and payment is to be introduced on both KI campuses on 1 January 2026. The physical stickers previously used will be discontinued and replaced by digital parking permits.

Send a Christmas greeting with KI's digital cards

This year, KI has two digital cards with winter motifs where you can write your own Christmas greeting. It is also possible to send the cards to a printing service for those who want paper cards.

KI recruits director for research infrastructure

KI is now looking for a director for research infrastructure. This is a new role that will be central to the development of Research Infrastructure at KI (RIKI), which will, among other things, meet the university's growing need for coordinated, quality-assured and secure core facilities. During the recruitment period, an acting director will be responsible for the work.

KI involved in Sweden’s largest excellence cluster initiative

The government has initiated an investment in new excellence clusters totalling SEK 2.5 billion. With five planning grants awarded by the Swedish Research Council and Vinnova, KI is one of the institutions taking the next step towards strengthening Sweden’s position in medical research and innovation.

Sustainable development in KI’s education with resource bank and new network

For teachers at KI interested in topics related to teaching for planetary health, sustainable development, and sustainable healthcare, there is now a resource bank with teaching materials and a network for support and knowledge exchange.
