Course coordination

The department coordinating the course is responsible for its implementation, quality and research basis in relation to the syllabus goals.

The responsibility applies to both programme courses and free-standing courses as well as executive and professional education. The head of department has the overall responsibility for the department's activities and that the preconditions for an enriching connection between research and education exist.

Course responsibility at first- and second-cycle level

The department's course responsibility at the at first- and second-cycle levels includes:

  • Plan, staff, implement and evaluate the department's courses with well thought out pedagogic methods, connection to research and adequate course content according to course syllabuses and for programme courses, also course curricula and in accordance with the funding agreement targets per course and year from the organization responsible for the programme.
  • Conduct course evaluations according to the action plan for quality evaluation and develop the courses based on the results.
  • Develop, award and secure teachers' subject competence, research connection and pedagogical ability as well as appoint one course coordinator and one examiner per course.
  • Responsibility for ensuring that the students have a good working environment, physically and mentally (Students are covered by the Work Environment Act and counted as employees during both theoretical studies and clinical studies. Chapter 1, Section 3, Work environment act (AML), including arranging support for students with special needs.
  • See to that student influence at the department level is working and provide feedback and the opportunity for them to influence their education/course.
  • Ensure that there are study administrative resources (includes various forms of administration such as study documentation, economy, archive/registry, web publishing, etc.), including establishing and managing course web sites with up-to-date, easily accessible and relevant information.
  • Driving internationalisation on course level and integrating an international perspective in education.
  • Prepare space for incoming international exchange students on existing courses and enable teacher exchange including receiving and integrating incoming teachers.
  • Collaborate interprofessionally with other study programmes and quality assure the clinical education (including examination, supervision and learning environment) including working to ensure that supervisors have sufficient subject competence, scientific competence and professional competence as well as competence regarding the supervisor assignment.
  • Report back to the Committee for Higher Education and organizations responsible for study programmes in accordance with instructions.
  • When it comes to programme courses, cooperate with other courses within the programme, with other departments and the organization responsible for the programme, with a view of achieving the goals for the programme as a whole.

Decisions within course responsibility

The Committee for Higher Education has delegated the task of decision making within the area of the own course responsibility to the head of department. The decision making may be delegated unless otherwise stated. Certain tasks, however, should be delegated to the Education Committee. The Committee for Higher Education can establish sub-committees and delegate the decision making to them, and to Departmental director of education/Programme director as well unless otherwise stated.

Course responsibility includes for example decisions on:

  • Establishing and revising syllabuses for the department's free-standing courses, executive education and elective courses available to several programmes.
  • Proposed syllabuses for programme courses (finalised by the programme responsible organisation)
  • Designate examiner
  • Department-specific guidelines, rules and instructions that are not regulated in centrally established guidelines.
  • Excess intake in a course, after consultation with the Student Support Office (UFS) as well as assessment of qualifications if overall assessment is used for admission in accordance with decisions and guidelines.

Of the above, the following decisions should be delegated to the Education Committee

  • Proposed syllabuses for programme courses (must not be delegated from the committee).
  • Establishing and revising the syllabuses for free standing courses, executive education and elective courses available to several programmes (decisions on finalising syllabuses may not be delegated)
  • Department-specific guidelines, rules and instructions that are not regulated in centrally established guidelines.
