Video in Canvas after the migration to Canvas Studio

The migration from Kaltura to Canvas Studio has now been completed. This means that Kaltura videos that were previously embedded in Canvas have been replaced with corresponding videos in Canvas Studio.

Canvas Studio is the recommended solution for video in Canvas going forward. All new video material used in Canvas courses should therefore be uploaded, managed and embedded through Canvas Studio.

Instructional video – Summary of the migration project (5:39 min).

In this video, Carina Bois shows how to find your videos from Kaltura and view them on your Canvas pages.

Do you want to identify where a video in Canvas comes from? See the guide: M1.8 How do I see the source of my video in Canvas?: 📹 Canvas Studio: English version

What does this mean for you?

  • You do not need to move embedded Kaltura videos manually to Canvas Studio.
  • Videos that were previously embedded from Kaltura on Canvas pages, assignments, quizzes or other course areas should now appear as Studio videos.
  • If you are working in a course and see an embedded video with the old orange Kaltura player, the video may need to be checked by support.
  • If you are publishing new video material in Canvas, use Canvas Studio.

How to recognise Studio and Kaltura in Canvas

Studio video: grey player

Videos that have been replaced with Canvas Studio are displayed in the Studio player, which has a light grey/grey appearance. The video should play directly on the Canvas page. If captions existed in the original Kaltura video, they should normally also be available in Studio.

Remember that the thumbnail in Studio is not always the same image that was shown in Kaltura. However, the video title should be the same.

Kaltura video: orange playback bar

A video that is still displayed with the orange Kaltura playback bar on a Canvas page, assignment, quiz or other course area may be an older Kaltura embed that has not been replaced with Studio content.

Contact support if you see such a video on a Canvas page where the video should have been replaced with Studio. Include:

  • a link to the Canvas page, assignment or quiz where the video is located
  • the video title
  • the Entry ID, if you can find it
  • preferably a brief description of what seems to be wrong

My Media and Media Gallery during the transition period

My Media and Media Gallery in Canvas still display material through Kaltura during the transition period. Videos shown there may therefore still have the orange Kaltura playback bar.

We recommend that teachers and course administrators disable My Media and Media Gallery in the course menu in Canvas courses where these menu items are no longer actively used. Otherwise, students may be unsure where to find the course video material.

Do not create new links to videos through My Media or Media Gallery. These areas still use Kaltura and are not a long-term solution for video in Canvas.

If you previously used Media Gallery as a place to collect course videos, we recommend that you instead create a Canvas page where you embed videos from Canvas Studio. Use Thumbnail View if you want to display several videos on the same page.

Studio in the course menu

If Studio is enabled in the course menu, you can see Studio videos that are associated with the course. However, Studio does not show which Canvas pages, assignments or quizzes the videos are actually embedded in.

Course video material should therefore primarily be presented on relevant Canvas pages, assignments, modules or other course areas where students encounter the content in context.

Videos from KI Play

Videos embedded from KI Play are not affected by the migration and will continue to work as before. The KI Play player does not have an orange playback bar.

If the video is used as part of teaching in a Canvas course, we recommend that it is moved to Canvas Studio over time and embedded from there. Canvas Studio is the recommended solution for video in Canvas and provides a clearer workflow for teachers, students and support.

Find and identify migrated videos in Studio

Migrated Kaltura videos are available in Canvas Studio, usually in a collection named migrated videos [your username].

If you need to check whether a Studio video originally came from Kaltura, open the video in Studio and select Details. The original Kaltura Entry ID may be retained there as information about the video.

The Entry ID can be useful when contacting support, as it makes it easier to compare the video in Studio with the original video in Kaltura.

Exceptions and items that may need action

Kaltura Interactive Video Quiz

Kaltura Interactive Video Quiz has not been migrated to Canvas Studio. If you previously used Kaltura Interactive Video Quiz, you need to create new interactive quizzes in Canvas Studio or use another suitable quiz function in Canvas.

Older or non-standard embeds

Some older Kaltura embeds may look different and may need to be checked separately. If you are unsure whether a video comes from Canvas/Kaltura, KI Play or an older embed, support can help you check this.

Captions

If captions are missing in Studio, first check whether captions existed in the original Kaltura video. Contact support if you know that captions should be available but are not displayed in Studio.
Recommendations for future video pages

Recommendations for future video pages

When publishing video in Canvas, we recommend that you always include information about the video as text on the Canvas page, above or close to the embedded video.

Include, where possible:

  • the video title
  • the name of the lecturer or presenter
  • the length of the video, preferably in the format xx:xx min
  • a brief description of what the video is about

This makes the page clearer for students, more accessible, and easier to troubleshoot or update in the future. It is not enough for the video title to appear only in the video player itself or on the first slide of a PowerPoint recording.

When should you contact support?

Contact support if:

  • a video that should have been replaced with Studio content is still displayed with a Kaltura player and orange playback bar on a Canvas page
  • the video cannot be played
  • captions are missing or do not work as expected
  • you do not recognise the video after the replacement
  • you are missing access to a video you need in Canvas Studio
  • you are unsure whether the video comes from KI Play, an older Kaltura embed or Canvas/Kaltura

Always include a link to the page where the video is located, the video title and, if possible, the Entry ID.
