Experts in internationalisation of higher education

The project the team has been supported by three experts in the field of internationalising higher education.

Betty Leask

Betty Leask is an Emeritus Professor in the Internationalisation of Higher Education at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. Betty is an internationally renowned researcher and thought leader on internationalization of the curriculum and higher education whose work bridges theory and practice in unique ways. She has a broad range of experience in universities, most recently as Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic at La Trobe University. She has been a Senior Australian Teaching Fellow since 2010.

In 2015 she was awarded the IEAA Excellence Award for Distinguished Contribution to International Education and in 2016 the European Association for International Education (EAIE) Tony Adams Award for Excellence in Research. Betty is also Editor-in Chief of the Journal of Studies in International Education, the leading journal in the field, and an Honorary Visiting Researcher at the Centre for Higher Education Internationalisation at Universita Cattolica del Sacre Cuore Milan.

Betty is Editor-in Chief of the Journal of Studies in International Education, the leading international journal in the field of international higher education, and is an Honorary Visiting Researcher at the Centre for Higher Education Internationalisation at the Universita Cattolica del Sacre Cuore in Milan, Italy. Betty was founding Chair of the International Education Association of Australia’s Internationalisation of the Curriculum Special Interest Group and is Chair of its Research Committee from 2010-2012.

Jeanine Gregersen-Hermans

Jeanine Gregersen-Hermans is an Honorary Senior Fellow of Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) as of January 2019. Previously she held the role of Pro Vice Chancellor and Vice Principal (International) at GCU. She serves as a member of the Supervisory Board of the Thomas More University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands. She was also the Director of Student Recruitment at the University of Hull, United Kingdom, and Director of Marketing and Communications and Spokesperson of the Executive Board at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. In the latter capacity, she was also appointed as additional Director of Maastricht Education and Research Centre, Bangalore, India. 

Jeanine holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and a PhD in Internationalisation of Higher Education. She publishes on topics of intercultural competence and internationalisation of higher education and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Studies in International Education (JSIE). Since 1997, Jeanine has been a senior trainer and actively involved in the EAIE’s Professional Development Programme. Jeanine won the 2008 EAIE Bo Gregersen Award for Best Practice for an innovative contribution to international education.

Esko Koponen

Esko Koponen is International Education Expert in the Strategic Services for Teaching of the University of Helsinki. His main responsibility is the strategic management of international academic affairs, including the development of programmes in English. He has 25 years of experience in international education, having previously worked in the Centre for International Mobility with European cooperation programs, and in international student services at the University of Kuopio. He has written a wiki guide on the design of programmes in English and on joint programme agreements for his university. He is a former board member of the EAIE Expert Community ’Study Abroad and Foreign Student Advisers’. Esko has run several sessions and workshops on the subject of teaching in English in both national and international contexts, including the annual EAIE conferences.
