Guide to teacher exchange in Erasmus+

You can teach at a partner university within an study programme, but you need to prepare and coordinate this with your department and study programme.

Preparations

  • Contact the international committee, international coordinator, or equivalent within your study programme to discuss suitable teaching opportunities and obtain approval for your application for a teacher exchange. If it concerns a department-level teacher exchange within Erasmus+, contact the Erasmus+ coordinator directly.
  • Coordinate your stay abroad with your supervisor (head of department or equivalent).
  • Reach out to the intended host institution to plan your stay.Specifics for teacher exchange in Erasmus+

Conditions

  • There must be a bilateral Erasmus agreement for exchange with the host institution. Contact Kelly Grahn if you want to know which agreements are in place.
  • You must teach KI students—either as a teacher, doctoral candidate, or supervisor for KI students, even if employed elsewhere.
  • The teacher exchange must include at least 8 hours of teaching and a minimum of two days.
  • Teaching at the partner university must involve the partner university’s students.
  • A written agreement (Teaching Programme) must be in place regarding the planned teaching at the partner university.
  • Remuneration levels are determined based on the distance to the destination ("Distance Calculator") from the home university and the cost level in the host country. The remuneration is a fixed grant, paid independently of the actual costs incurred during the exchange.
  • Travel reports must be written after the exchange, in the form of a blog post for KI and a direct report from Erasmus+, which will be sent out sometime after the exchange.
  • According to the current healthcare program, MRSA screening must be conducted for teachers who have worked (or been patients) in hospitals or other healthcare institutions outside Sweden in the last six months before returning to duty.
  • You can also combine a teacher exchange with staff training. In such cases, four hours of teaching apply.
  • Erasmus Programme Guide

Once you have followed the procedures for a teacher exchange, contact the Erasmus+ coordinator.  After registration, you will receive travel documentation and other necessary forms needed to fulfill EU requirements.

The levels are determined by the rules of the specific scholarship fund from which the funds are taken. Since a breakpoint occurs 31 July, 2025, where new rules come into effect, you should use the table with standard amounts that corresponds to your planned exchange period – either before or after this date. The tables can be found on Erasmus+ - teacher exchanges and staff training.

Receiving incoming teachers within the Erasmus+

Incoming teachers are welcome to register at KI. The Erasmus exchanges of incoming teachers are administered by their home university. The teacher’s stipend also comes from their home university. Contact Kelly Grahn for more information.

Teacher exchanges outside Erasmus countries

From autumn semester 2022 there are limited options for teacher exchanges to countries that are not regular Erasmus countries. Minimum stay is five days, and there is remuneration per day, as well as for travel depending on the distance to the teaching destination. Please contact Kelly Grahn if you wish to discuss this option.
