Change at FyFa

FyFa is changing. The changes are taking place to meet important opportunities and challenges for the department, both internal ones and those coming from the outside world. This page contains summarised information about FyFa's change journey. The page will be updated continuously.

Changes and challenges - at FyFa, in the outside world and at KI - provide new opportunities and challenges for the department. FyFa needs to come up with solutions to ensure long-term sustainability and security for the department and for those who work at FyFa. Financial challenges, high workloads in terms of both research and teaching activities, changed conditions from KI centrally and a generational change that will soon take place, those are some of the main challenges at the moment. For some time now, work has been underway on several parallel tracks on FyFa’s change journey with the aim of equipping the department to be strong and united for the future. Here are some steps on that journey:

FyFa’s new vision and mission

FyFa's work is guided by FyFa's vision and mission, both during the change process and in the department's overall work. These have been developed as a result of a long period of work within the department. FyFa's vision is: Pioneering physiology and pharmacology to drive next generation discoveries and health care.

New educational organisation

Since 1 July, FyFa has a new educational organisation that exists to meet some of the department's challenges. The department has created a new organisation for education that provides greater security and clarity, both for the department and for the individual at FyFa. The new educational organisation aims to make FyFa sustainable in the long term for teachers, researchers and students, and aims to give us better opportunities to secure generational shifts and competence to be able to carry out our teaching mission with high quality. This, in turn, provides good conditions for increasing the sense of belonging and the FyFa spirit.

Interim model for new resource allocation system

KI centrally is currently preparing a new model for resource allocation as new rules and directives from the Swedish government have arrived. This, together with the need to increase the quality and efficiency of our own resource allocation model, has meant that FyFa also needs to make adjustments. From 1 January 2025, an interim model will apply at FyFa, for the distribution of the research part of the government appropriations. This interim model will harmonise with the model currently being discussed centrally at KI and will allow FyFa to begin the change towards a sustainable permanent model for the long term.  The permanent model for both research and teaching is being developed and will be clearly linked to the mission, role distribution and requirements profile. The aim is for the permanent model to enter into force on 1 January 2026.
