Follow-up of business travels by air
Emissions from business travel are one of KI’s most significant environmental aspects. Therefore, KI works to reduce the negative environmental impact of business travel through various measures. One of these measures is to compile and follow up on the statistics available on air travel.
Each year, a comprehensive follow-up is conducted on the trips made using various modes of transport such as car, train, bus, and air travel. The statistics are included, among other things, in KI’s environmental management report to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. The statistics are based on data provided by for example KI’s travel agencies.
Follow-up of air travel at departmental level
The majority of KI’s emissions from business travels come from air travel. Starting in 2024, statistics on KI’s air travel will be compiled and shared with each department. Since business trips are largely decided at the departmental level, this data is intended to facilitate the departments’ own sustainability efforts.
With the help of the statistics, the department can continuously monitor how they contribute to KI’s carbon emissions through their air travel and develop measures to achieve a reduction in line with KI’s goals.
Effective to reduce air travel
The statistics themselves do not reduce emissions from our business travel but provide us with more knowledge about which measures can be effective in reducing our environmental impact. KI’s environmental management report shows that almost 90 percent of KI’s carbon emissions from business travel today come from air travel. An effective measure is to choose digital meetings or travel with more environmentally friendly alternatives, such as trains, when possible.
About the statistics
KI’s travel manager will provide the statistics with the head of department and head of administration of each department.
The statistics consist of:
- Number of flights
- Number of kilometers flown
- Carbon emissions
The statistics are divided into:
- Domestic travel
- Travel within the Nordic countries
- Travel within Europe
- Travel outside Europe
The statistics are based only on flights booked through KI’s travel agency Amex and therefore do not include:
- Flights booked through other travel agencies, such as Tranås
- Flights reimbursed as expenses.
