Positions at KI
Unlike other recruitments, a PhD student is recruited to a place in an education program and not to an employment. This means that the process and regulations are partly different, but the need to choose the right candidate is as important for recruitment of doctoral students as in other recruitments. It should be noted that the chance of a successful recruitment increases if the offered individual research training is defined in advance and a correct requirement profile is formulated.
An appointment as postdoctoral is a time-limited career-development position with a main focus on research. An appointment as post doc is as a first career step after the dissertation. A person can be employed as post doc at KI for a maximum of four years ( Limitation of time according to LAS, max 2 years, and according to the collective agreement on fixed term employment as post-doctoral student (PKA) max 2 years. Qualifying to be employed as post-doctoral student according to the collective agreement (PKA) is the one who holds a doctoral degree within the past three years. When employed according to PKA, the employment may be extended if there are special reasons. Special reasons refers to leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical duty, commission of trust in unions or other similar circumstances. Please note that post-doctoral scholarships are not included within these four years.
Scholarship for postdoctoral studies may be granted to persons residing in other countries who comes to Sweden with the intention of staying in Sweden for all or part of their postdoctoral education at KI. Persons resident in Sweden and / or have completed full or part of their academic education at KI or any other university in Sweden cannot qualify for a scholarship from KI. Currently,
Lecturer is a teacher's employment with the principle task of taking care of education. Eligibility requirements for Lecturer are pedagogical skills and, in general, doctoral degree / equivalent within the relevant field of study for the assignments.
An Adjunct Lecturer at KI shall have their main employment and activities outside the higher education sector. The purpose of the employment is to contribute expertise that is not generally found within the ordinary activities and which are necessary for education of high quality.
An employment as a researcher is an employment within the research career, which normally falls after the period of post-doctor and research assistant, or equivalent. Qualifying to be employed as a researcher is the one who has obtained a PhD or has equivalent scientific competence, as well as documented research work after the dissertation. In addition, demonstrated pedagogical skills or any other professional skills that are important in view of the duties of the employment can be set as requirements for eligibility.
An employment as Assistant Professor is a fixed term career development position. The employment period as Assistant Professor is usually lays directly after completing a postdoctoral or equivalent period. An Assistant Professor can apply for promotion to senior lecturer and their application will be assed based on the supplemental instructions to the appointment procedure 3.3 Promotion of Assistant Professor.
To be considered as qualified for an Assistant Professors employment, the candidate should have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period. The employment period of an Assistant Professor may vary between 4-6 years. The employment period is determined before the announcement of the Assistant Professorship.
Senior Lecturer is the second highest employment as a teacher. All Senior Lecturers at KI must demonstrate both research and teaching expertise. General entry requirements include a PhD. A Senior Lecturer should normally have competence corresponding to Associate Professor (Docent) at KI. In addition, additional eligibility requirements in the requirements profile are determined based on the employment assignments relevant to the employment.
An Adjunct Senior Lecturer at KI shall have the main employment and activities outside the higher education sector. The purpose of the employment is to contribute expertise that is not generally found within the ordinary activities and the position should be of importance and benefit to KI.
The position as professor is the foremost academic position at KI.
An Adjunct Professor at KI should have the main employment and activities outside the higher education sector. The purpose of the employment is to contribute with expertise that is not generally found within the ordinarcy activities and the position should be of importance and benefit to KI .
A Visiting Professor at KI should be employed by another university or equivalent institutionen, either in Sweden or abroad. The Visiting Professor should have a clear connection with KI as well as participate in activities such as research, doctoral studies and first-cycle studies. The scope may vary between 20 and 100 percent. The first appointment cannot exceed three years and can subsequently be extended. The total employment period is maximum five years.
Foreign Adjunct Professor is an appointment intended to link reputable foreign Professors to KI in the long term, thereby strengthening the international network of contacts.
Nomination to a Professorship should be used very sparingly and only if a normal recruiting procedure would constitute a risk of losing the most qualified person (for example due to time restraints). The offering of a chair may be made on scientific and/or pedagogical grounds.
Only those that are evidently eligble and who have demonstrated particulary strong research and/or teaching expertise may be nominated to professorships at KII. The individual in question shall occupy a position or appointment at another Swedish institute of higher education equivalent to a professorship at KI, or at another national or international educational institution at an equivalent academic level, and a position as a leading researcher in their chosen field.
A requirement profile must be prepared prior to the commencement of any nomination procedure.
The procedure is carried out using the highest degree of confidentiality possible.
Decisions on calling for professors are taken by the Rector.
A professor who is employed after the age of 67 will have the title of senior professor. The role of senior professor is not a professorial employment pursuant to the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100) but a position which enables temporary employment after retirement. Only those who, at the time of old age pension, were employed as professors at KI may be employed as senior professors. As employment as senior professor should take place immediately after the employment at KI terminates, a new expert examination is not required.
The employment is valid for a period of one year at a time and may be extended for a maximum of five years. The capacity utilisation rate should comprise minimum 10% and maximum 50% of full time. Employment after the age of 67 should not comprise engagement as a manager or duties with a supervisory position or new assignments as main supervisor for doctoral students.
Continued activities after retirement at the age of 67 should, in the first instance, be conducted as an affiliation, for instance as Professor emeritus/emerita, without employment taking place. If the department is of the opinion that there are reasons to employ a teacher or a researcher after the age of 67 based on grounds other than association, such a decision should be specifically considered and justified.
Other technical and administrative personnel are called TA staff within the KI.
