New instructions for the employment of teachers at KI

On 29 September, new guidelines for the employment of teachers at KI has been decided. The guidelines have been developed as part of the prioritised focus area C1: a long-term and systematic work on dimensioning, recruitment and skills supply. 

The new guidelines will apply from 15 October 2026. Read more about the changes here: Teaching positions at KI.

The new guidelines also allow positions as assistant senior lecturer, assistant professor and lecturer to be combined with employment in a licensed healthcare profession. However, this possibility cannot be applied until Region Stockholm has entered into a collective agreement that enables such combined positions. Further information will be provided when applicable.

Please note: During a transitional period, three different sets of regulations will apply in parallel. Which regulations apply will depend on when the recruitment process was initiated.

The appointment and evaluation processes must be transparent, clear and pedagogically designed.

Specific information for assistant professors

For those who were employed as assistant professor as of November 1, 2024, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria in these instructions apply when applying for promotion from assistant professor to senior lecturer.

Instructions for the Appointment Procedure for teachers at Karolinska Institutet (ref no 1-600/2025)

Valid until October 14, 2026. 

The guidelines apply to recruitment cases where the advertisement was published no later than 14 October 2026.

If you were appointed as an assistant professor on or after 1 November 2024, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria set out in the guidelines with reference number 1-408/2026 apply when applying for promotion from assistant professor to senior lecturer.

Instructions for the employment regulations for teachers at Karolinska Institutet (1-23/2022)

 

Valid as of February 1, 2022 until 31 October 2024.

For those who were employed as assistant professors before 2024-11-01, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria in these instructions apply when applying for promotion from assistant professor to senior lecturer.

Specific information for assistant professors

In the instructions (1-23/2022) a clarification has been made regarding an incorrect wording regarding promotion to senior lecturer. The instructions (1-23/2022) state that the assistant professor must meet eligibility requirements and assessment criteria for employment as a lecturer to be promoted to senior lecturer. 

Eligibility requirements and assessment criteria must, however, be applied in the same way, regardless of whether the announcement took place in competition or not. The assistant professor must thus meet the eligibility requirements for employment as a senior lecturer, an overall assessment of the assessment criteria for employment as a senior lecturer must then be made. However, all assessment criteria that Karolinska Institutet has decided to apply when promoting to associate professor must also be met.
