Guidelines for the handling of blood and other human samples

Research group leaders and head of units must ensure that their employees performing laboratory work are educated on the risks associated with handling infectious materials, on how pathogens are transmitted, and on protective measures to mitigate these risks. The same employees should also receive training on hygiene and other preventative measures in case of an incident.

Summary of the guidelines

This document outlines the requirements at Karolinska Institutet for handling blood and other human materials, the safety measures that must be applied for such handling, and how they shall be implemented. The principle for these rules is that all blood and blood-contaminated materials are considered infectious and must therefore be handled in Biosafety level 2 (BSL-2).
