SEEDS - Reimagining health education for a changing planet

A pedagogical network for teachers at KI.

We are living through a planetary crisis that is already shaping human health. Education can either reproduce the systems that created this crisis or help transform them.

SEEDS brings together educators at Karolinska Institutet who choose the latter and who are willing to cultivate ways of educating for planetary health and sustainable development within planetary boundaries.

Why this matters

Healthcare both protects and harms health. It contributes significantly to environmental degradation while simultaneously being on the frontlines of its consequences. Education plays a critical role in addressing this paradox. Yet many educators lack the space, tools, and community needed to meaningfully integrate sustainable development and planetary health into their teaching.

SEEDS exists to create the conditions where new perspectives can take root and where small shifts in education can grow into meaningful change.

Our principles

We do not see sustainability as an add-on. We see it as a shift in perspective.

  • Health is relational between people, systems, and the living planet.
  • Education should challenge assumptions and foster critical thinking,  not only transfer knowledge.
  • Uncertainty is not a barrier to teaching it is part of what must be taught.
  • Sustainable healthcare must include justice, equity, and global responsibility.
  • Change grows through collaboration, not isolated effort.

Co-creation lab

Transformation does not happen through guidelines alone. It grows through experimentation, dialogue, and reflection. The Co-creation Lab is where educators come together to test new ideas, challenge each other, and develop teaching that reflects the realities of a changing world. Our gatherings are not about delivering answers. They are about creating space to think, question, and explore together.

Next co-creation lab: 12 June at 10-12

A community of educators

The network brings together educators across disciplines who share a commitment to rethinking health education. Members range from course leaders and clinical supervisors to researchers and educational developers.

Initiated and supported at Karolinska Institutet

The development of the network is supported through an assignment from the Council for Environment and Sustainable Development at Karolinska Institutet, with the aim of strengthening educators’ capacity to engage with sustainable development within planetary boundaries in ways that are meaningful, critical, and transformative.

Join the network

Whether you are experienced in sustainability or just beginning, you are welcome. The network is open to all educators at Karolinska Institutet interested in exploring and advancing education for sustainable development and sustainable healthcare.
