From global perspectives to local initiatives: KI’s Sustainability Day 2025

KI Sustainability Day 2025 took place on 2 April in Biomedicum. The day was filled with lectures, inspiration, posters and the awarding of KI's Sustainability Prize 2025. The theme of the day was "planetary boundaries and the connection to health".

Karin Dahlman-Wright, Chair of the Council for Environment and Sustainable Development, opened the day. The morning was about KI's environmental work, planetary boundaries and health, sustainable healthcare and the global perspective. During lunch, the participants mingled and took part in the poster exhibition. KIB participated with a book table, as well as Akademiska Hus.

After lunch, there was an award ceremony. KI's Sustainability Prize 2025 was awarded to Ann Liljas and Ester Gubi at the Department of Global Health. For the first time, the best student posters were selected, which this year were awarded to Zacharenia Kourkounaki and Tanja Paul, as well as Tam Lac (see motivations below).

In the afternoon, several good and important examples of sustainability work within KI were presented.

The day ended with a conversation with Maria Wolrath Söderberg about what makes people change – and what holds us back.

Motivations for the winners of the student poster competition

Zacharenia Kourkounaki & Tanja Paul:

Zacharenia and Tanja present the project “Sustainability in Biomedicine – Systemic change through the Planetary Health Report Card (PHRC)”. The PHRC, a tool to evaluate university engagement in planetary health and sustainability, has the potential to lead to long-term systemic change within the Biomedicine program at KI. The project is ambitious, but the proposed strategy is clear and well thought-out. The poster design is explicit and visually appealing. Great work!

Tam Lac:

Tam presents the project “Eco-Eater: Our food choice, our campus, our planet”. This project, aiming to increase student awareness around sustainable eating, has the potential to positively impact both individual and planetary health. The project has a well-defined question and a structured, feasible plan with a clear timeline. The poster visuals are well designed.
