Sustainable Campus in collaboration with Akademiska Hus
KI rents a wide range of facilities from Akademiska Hus, including workspaces, lecture halls, laboratories, meeting places, and housing. A collaboration agreement with the vision to ensure that all aspects of sustainability should be considered in all typ of facilities, was signes by KI President Annika Östman Wernerson and CEO of Akademiska Hus, Caroline Arehult on June 30, 2025.

Joint Sustainability Goals
- Strengthen collaboration and systematize joint sustainability efforts
- Reduce energy use, both operational and building-related
- Optimize the use and coordination of facilities to meet current and future needs without compromising social values
- Reduce waste and increase reuse
- Promote sustainable mobility solutions within and to/from campus areas
- Further develop and strengthen gender equality, safety, and health on campus
The Sustainability group takes the collaboration forward
Sustainability issues have, during the first year of the collaboration agreement, become a natural part of existing meetings between Akademiska Hus and KI, such as building meetings and project groups. To coordinate and communicate the work, there is a dedicated sustainability group, with representatives from both organizations:
- Johanna Billberg (Akademiska Hus)
- Håkan Sandhagen (Akademiska Hus)
- Björn Blomquist (Akademiska Hus)
- Lars Gradén (Akademiska Hus)
- Anette Backhumla (Property and Facilities Office, KI)
- Lilia Daianova (Environmental Coordinator, KI)
- Maya Petrén (Environmental Coordinator, KI)
What the collaboration has achieved in 2025–2026
During the first year of the collaboration, sustainability issues have been included in all the regular building meetings held between KI and Akademiska Hus for the various buildings on both campuses. To promote energy savings, separate meetings on energy have been launched.
The sustainability group, comprising representatives from both KI and Akademiska Hus, has carried out communication initiatives to gather feedback and ideas from staff and students. Several ideas have contributed to the action plan drawn up by the sustainability group, which is based on the six shared sustainability goals.
Work on implementing the activities in the action plan has begun during the year. Concrete measures that have been implemented include improved waste sorting in some of the buildings on campus. To save energy, stickers have been placed on fume cupboards reminding people to close them when not in use. The sustainability group is also working to promote social sustainability, for example by reviewing the lighting on KI’s campuses to improve safety for staff and students who are there in the evenings.
