The Biosafety Committee

The Biosafety committee works on behalf of the KI Safety Committee and is KI´s coordinating and advisory part within the field of biosafety and the use of genetically modified microorganisms. The committee ensures compliance with laws and regulations in the field are followed.

The assignment includes, but is not limited to risk assessments, cassification issues, infection risks, protective measures, protection levels and procedures for notifications and applications involving infectious agents and the contained use of genetically modified microorganisms (GMM)

Specifically, the Biosafety Committee shall:

  • inform KI’s operations about biosafety and biosecurity and promote good dialogue with research group leaders, biosafety representatives, and others
  • respond to questions regarding biosafety
  • pay particular attention to and respond to questions regarding notifications for work with GMM and infectious agents to the Swedish Work Environment Authority
  • maintain a register of notifications and applications for GMM activities at KI
  • propose and prepare documentation for decisions on steering documents related to biosafety and biosecurity
  • participate in internal training, investigations, and consultation responses in the field
  • review grant applications to NIH involving GMM and GMO from a biosafety perspective

The Biosafety Committee shall also participate in work related to biosecurity, which includes efforts to prevent and deter the loss, theft, misuse, embezzlement, or intentional unauthorized dissemination of infectious agents and toxins.
