Lab computers and lab networks – definitions and management
A lab computer is a computer connected to specific hardware or a system solution that cannot be managed in ITA's client platform. Here you can read more about the definitions of a lab computer and how it is managed when ITA does not offer support.
Definition of lab computer
A lab computer is a computer that is connected to specific hardware or a system solution and cannot be managed in ITA's client platform.
These computers are often used to control instruments or special equipment where the supplier requires a specific version of the operating system, software or configuration. Examples of lab computers are instrument computers for microscopes or sequencing machines.
Criteria for lab computers
- Not a regular client computer: Not intended for personal use, multiple users, kiosk mode or similar.
- Not a member of central AD: Lab computers are not connected to KI's central Active Directory.
- Limited network access: Only has access to a special lab network.
- Registration required: Must be registered in ITAM before connecting to the lab network, with the following information:
- Responsible person/institution and contact details.
- Equipment type, such as manufacturer, model, designation, serial number.
- Purpose and estimated service life.
- MAC address.
Support and licences
- Support: The supplier and managing user are responsible for support. ITA Campus Support provides assistance on a "best effort" basis upon request.
- Central KI licences: Application distribution of centrally managed KI licences may occur in exceptional cases by special agreement, in which case KI's licence management software "Snow" is required to be installed on the device. For other needs, please refer to other client services.
Lab network: definition and access
The lab network is an internal, segmented network intended specifically for lab computers and special equipment.
Access and restrictions
- Limited access: Only certain resources can be accessed, such as lab folders (L:).
- No direct access to production systems: Exceptions may occur (e.g. MFT, Eduprint), but must be carefully evaluated.
- Remote control: Access from Karyon client possible via VNC/SSH/RDP.
- No direct internet access: Updates are made via lab folders (L:), for example.
- External support: Suppliers are granted external access via a designated, secure solution for remote support.
Principles for other computers
Computers that are not migrated to the Karyon client service and do not meet the lab computer criteria are referred to Eduroam or KI-Guest.
