Combined appointments

A combined appointment consists of two linked employments: one at Karolinska Institutet (KI) and one at a university healthcare unit (USV unit). The employments are combined through a shared occupational pension arrangement and are intended to strengthen the connection between research, education, and healthcare. At KI, appointments as Professor or Senior Lecturer may be combined with an appointment at a USV unit.

A professorship or senior lectureship may be combined with a position as a specialist physician or with another position at a USV unit, such as a speech and language pathologist, nurse, occupational therapist, or physiotherapist. Managerial positions may also form part of the clinical appointment. A position as a licensed physician without specialist training cannot be combined with an appointment at KI.

Combined appointments are regulated by, among other things, the Higher Education Act, the Higher Education Ordinance, the Health and Medical Services Act, as well as relevant collective agreements and internal regulations and procedures.

Expansion of opportunities under way

A new Appointment Procedure for Teachers at KI entered into force on 1 April 2026. Under the new appointment procedure, greater flexibility is provided to combine academic positions with clinical appointments in healthcare. In addition to Professors and Senior Lecturers, it will also be possible for Assistant Professors, Assistant Senior Lecturers, and Lecturers to hold a combined appointment.

However, KI cannot implement these new opportunities until a new collective agreement has been concluded with Region Stockholm. More information will be provided as soon as the timetable has been established.
