Research school for clinicians in psychiatry (KI-Region Stockholm)
Karolinska Institutet (KI) and Region Stockholm are offering a research school in clinical psychiatry for doctoral students working in Region Stockholm.
The aim of the research school is to teach current knowledge of psychopathogenic mechanisms and to provide more advanced training in research methods, with an emphasis on quantitative methodology, in the field of psychiatry for clinical active doctoral students within the field.
After completing the research school, participants are expected to be able to:
- formulate specific scientific hypotheses,
- design clinical experimental and observational studies,
- compose applications for research grants and to ethical review boards,
- conduct data-gathering procedures,
- analyse data, independently and with statisticians,
- interpret results,
- write scientific reports, and
- critically review publications.
Call for applications
The announcement for the research school that starts in the autumn of 2023 has ended and the places have been filled.
Announcement period for places in the research school starting in autumn 2025: The announcement tentatively opens no later than December 2024, and the last day for applications will tentatively be in the beginning of March 2025.
Target group
The research school aims at doctoral students at KI, who has not yet completed their half-time seminar. The research school is for clinically active doctoral students working for Region Stockholm. Applicants should be clinically affiliated through a permanent position, a research residency block or other position that lasts the duration of the research school period.
If the applicant has not yet been admitted to doctoral education at KI at the time of application, the prospective principal supervisor shall estimate when the admission is planned to take place. The applicant must be admitted to doctoral education at latest three weeks before the course start during autumn 2023. After admission, complementary documentation of admission shall be sent to administrative officer Katarzyna Kumanowska.

Eligibility
Eligible to apply is anyone who:
- are clinically active individuals working for Region Stockholm. Applicants should be clinically affiliated through a permanent position, a research residency block or other position that lasts the duration of the research school period by Region Stockholm or a partnered care provider that lasts the duration of the research school period
- has a doctoral student at KI or expected to be admitted to doctoral education at latest three weeks before course start
Assessment of the application
Your application will be judged from two perspectives:
- The project – scientific quality, feasibility and relevance
- The applicant – experience and motivation
The applicants’ places of work will also be factored in so as to achieve a fair spread across hospitals and within Region Stockholm. KI’s equal opportunity targets will also be taken in account.

Your application is to contain the following information:
- CV (maximum 2 pages, in English)
- Description of your research plan (maximum 3 pages, including references) in English
- Reasons for applying (why you want and need to take this particular research school), maximum 1 page, in English
- Signed testimony from a supervisor confirming your suitability and need for the research school
- Signed testimony from your clinical manager that you will be granted leave with salary to attend the research school
- If the applicant is not yet admitted to doctoral education at KI, a complementary description of the prospective supervisor is needed. (Although, note that the applicant must be admitted to doctoral education at latest three weeks before the course start during autumn 2023. After admission, complementary documentation of admission shall be sent to administrative officer Katarzyna Kumanowska.)
Courses
The research school comprises a total of 16 weeks of full-time study (24 credits) over two years, divided into four four-week blocks.
The research school, which is to be completed in its entirety, partly includes the obligatory courses for doctoral students at Karolinska Institutet, as well as more advanced training of research methods, with an emphasis on epidemiological methods and biostatistics, including psychiatric research methods within genetics, neurobiology and brain imaging. Please note that the course Quality assurance of clinical research that is obligatory for students who are to conduct clinical research is not included in the research school’s course package. Reimbursement to participant´s clinic from Region Stockholm
The research school reimburses each participant’s clinic a sum of SEK 6,748 + salary-related costs per week during the course periods on condition that the clinical manager (or his/her equivalent) testifies that the participant will be granted paid leave for each course period. During the course periods there will be no time or opportunity for any parallel clinical work.
