Funding for collaboration with partners in Africa
Junior researchers are invited to apply for funding to strengthen collaboration or to establish new collaboration with partners in low- and middle-income countries in Africa.
The Internationalisation Board announces funding with the aim to initiate or strengthen equitable, sustainable partnerships and stimulate research, capacity building, and long‑term academic cooperation.

Purpose of the grant
The purpose of this call is to strengthen ongoing collaboration or to establish new collaboration, that contributes to fighting poverty and achieving sustainable health and development, together with partners in Africa.
This funding supports
- Development of new or existing research collaborations with African partner institutions
- Joint research activities, including pilot studies, fieldwork, and laboratory work
- Capacity building such as research exchanges, mentorship, and training
- Strengthening of equitable and mutually beneficial partnerships
Funding available
The grant amount ranges from 50 000 to 100 000 SEK per application, and no award will exceed the amount applied for. Eligible costs include travel and accommodation for visits to the partner institution, short-term exchanges, and activities that support the preparation of larger grant applications. In exceptional cases, funds may also cover equipment and operational costs, if clearly justified.
Approved grants will be transferred to the applicant’s department.
Timeline for 2026 call
- Opening date: 1 June 2026
- Application period: 1 June – 1 September 2026
- Closing date: 1 September 2026
- Decision notification: Mid‑October 2026
- Disbursement of awarded funds to the applicant’s department: November–December 2026
- Project period for use of awarded funds: 2027
This grant is awarded for a period of one (1) year, 12 months in total, from the date of disbursement and must be used before 31 December 2027.
Who can apply
Eligible applicants are employees or affiliated researchers at KI, who hold a doctoral degree but have not yet reached the rank of Docent. Priority will be given to researchers who have acquired their doctoral degree during the past seven (7) * years, i.e., after January 1st, 2019. *The seven-year period includes time taken for parental or other types of leave.
Application process
Applications are submitted through KI Prisma.
The application should include:
- Project Description
Objectives, relevance, planned activities and how the activities will contribute to strengthening or developing the collaboration, to what extent the project contributes to fighting poverty and achieving sustainable health and development, expected outcomes and a plan for dissemination of results. - Partner Information
- Name and description of the collaborating institution, including its current scope and potential for future collaboration and external funding
- Upload a signed letter of support from the collaborating institution
Co-applicants are not included in this call. Applications must be submitted by a single applicant only
- Alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
State how the collaboration contributes to sustainable health and global equity. - Budget Plan
Complete budget according to Prisma’s format. A budget that includes direct and indirect costs
Decision
The decision will be based on the quality of the project, the relevance to the purpose of the call, the feasibility of the project and potential for long-term collaboration of the proposal. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of the decision by e-mail in October.
Reporting
If funding was not used during the disposition period, the full amount should be returned.
Recipients must provide:
- A short progress report during implementation
- A final report summarising results, collaboration outcomes, and capacity-building efforts
