The principle of running a research project is quite similar to running a business: you need a team of people, a place for them to work at, and money for all their activities. 

As there are many ways to fund research, you should know who can help you and with what.

Once you receive the notice of award and before the project can start, a contract between the funding agency and the grantee is prepared. Additional agreements might be required.

The scientific management is normally handled by the PI, and the financial parts of most grants is managed by your department's administration.

Final scientific and financial report must be submitted by the end of your research project.
