Research grant for collaboration with partners in Africa

The Internationalisation Board invites junior researchers to apply for research grants aimed at fostering collaboration 2026 with partners in Africa.

Purpose

The purpose of this call is to strengthen ongoing collaboration or to establish new collaboration, that contributes to fighting poverty and achieving sustainable health and development, together with partners in Africa.
List of all low and middle income countries based on gross national income (GNI) per capita as published by the World Bank.

Amount

The amount granted is 50 000 - 100 000 SEK per application. Higher amounts than the requested are never granted. The grant may cover transportation and accommodation costs, related to visits at the host institution. Funding may also cover short-term exchanges and fellowships, as well as for activities that facilitate writing of larger grant proposals. In exceptional cases, funding may be used for equipment and operational costs, provided a clear justification is included in the application. Approved grants will be transferred to the applicant’s department.

Timeline

This grant is awarded for a period of one (1) year, 12 months in total, from the date of disbursement and must be used before 31 December 2026. Funds can only be used for the purposes outlined in the grant agreement. 

Eligibility

Eligible to apply are employees or affiliated researchers at KI, who earned a doctoral degree, but have not yet attained the rank Docent. Priority will be given to researchers who have acquired their doctoral degree during the past seven (7) * years, i.e., after January 1st, 2018. *The seven-year period includes time taken for parental or other types of leave.

Application

The application must contain the following:

  1. Project description 
    A concise description of the proposed project (maximum 2000 characters including spaces) that contains:
    1. details of the planned activities, including what will be done, how it will be done, and the project timeline
    2. expected outcomes/outputs
    3. a plan for dissemination of results 
       
  2. Collaboration overview
    A brief description of the collaboration, including its current scope and potential for future collaboration and external funding, maximum half an A4 page.
     
  3. Project relevance and impact (maximum 2000 characters including spaces). 
    Describe:
    1. the relevance of the project
    2. how the activities will contribute to strengthening or developing the collaboration,
    3. to what extent the project contributes to fighting poverty and achieving sustainable health and development.
       
  4. Alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) 
    Specify which of the UN SDGs the project aims to address or advance.
     
  5. Budget
    A detailed budget that includes direct and indirect costs  
     
  6. Partner Information 
    Provide information about the collaborative partner (institution) and upload a supporting letter from the collaborative partner.

The application is submitted digitally through the application submission system KI Prisma during the application period  from 2 June to 2 September 2025 at 14:00.

Decision

The decision will be based on the quality of the project, the relevance to the purpose of the call, the feasibility of the project and potential for long-term collaboration of the proposal. The decision will be made by the KI Internationalisation Board and applicants will be notified of the outcome by e-mail in October 2025.

Reports

After the end of the grant period, you must login to the electronic application submission system Prisma to confirm whether the granted funding was used, or not. If funding was not used during the disposition period, the full amount should be returned.

A report must be submitted via Prisma within 12 months after the funding has been used. You will receive an e-mail notification when it is time to report.
