GitHub Copilot - business licence through KI

GitHub Copilot is an AI-powered code completion service that helps developers write code faster and more efficiently. At KI, we now have the opportunity to order licences for GitHub Copilot Business if you, as a developer, have needs that are not covered by the free licence.

GitHub Copilot Free is a free licence that may well cover your needs as a developer. You can get this free licence on your own on the GitHub website.

GitHub Copilot Free offers a limited number of code completions and access to simpler models - not necessarily the very latest.

You can read more about the different levels of GitHub Copilot at GitHub - and see their user documentation that clarifies what the free licence includes.

The business licence, which can now be ordered through the licence function on KI, gives access to more powerful tools such as an unlimited number of code completions and chat requests, as well as access to more models (such as currently Google's Gemini 1.5 Pro and OpenAI's o1-preview and -mini models).

Ordering of licence

KI employees can now order licences for GitHub Copilot Business through Wisum.

If you do not already have a GitHub account, you must create one, which you then enter during the order process. The IT Office will then assign you access to KI's business licence.

For more information on how to order licences, see the Order software licences page.

Keep this in mind when using GitHub Copilot

  • Users are encouraged to be critical of the information generated and not to rely solely on the AI service's output.
  • The service should only be used to manage source code, not sensitive data such as personal data.
  • As with other cloud services, use common sense. That is, be critical of the service's proposals and restrictive about what data you provide.
