If you are a teacher, clinical supervisor or involved in education, there are courses and workshops in different areas and at different levels to help you develop your teaching skills. On this page you will also find courses in digital learning.
Courses for teachers and clinical supervisors
Basic courses
The courses are designed in accordance with the national recommendations developed by SUHF (The Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions). The courses are meritorious when applying for a docentship. KI and SUHF recommend that teachers take ten weeks of higher education pedagogy training.
There are three ways of taking basic courses - the pedagogical theory and level are the same in all courses, but the structure, working methods and content focus differ.
Teaching and learning in higher education, distance (known as GHPD in Swedish)
The course is aimed at educator's and supervisors with little or no training in higher education pedagogy who teach or supervise students on KI’s degree programmes. The course provides a general introduction to pedagogy in higher education and enables participants to discuss theories and concepts within higher education pedagogy in relation to their professional practice and personal experiences.

Scope
The course is equivalent to five weeks of full-time study (200 hours)
Language
The course will be conducted in both Swedish and English. Language preference is indicated upon registration.
Higher education pedagogy -Specialisation in work-based learning (HPK in Swedish)
The course aims to enhance the pedagogical skills of teachers and supervisors, and to encourage a reflective and academic approach to work-integrated learning (WIL) and work-based learning (WBL). The course focuses on student learning, the professional teacher and supervisor, and goal-oriented teaching, assessment and examination in WIL/WBL. Societal objectives and the regulatory framework governing higher education programmes in healthcare are also addressed.
Application and admission
Applications for the course must be submitted via Antagning.se between 16 March and 15 April. The website contains information on entry requirements, the selection process and key dates.

Stepping stone courses: Pedagogy in work-based learning
Stepping Stone courses are designed for those with supervisory roles or involved in student learning within work-integrated learning/work-based training in the healthcare sector in Region Stockholm. These courses count towards eligibility when applying for a docentship. Stepping stone courses consist of five short training modules across three stages:
- Introduction to the subject (Session 1)
- Independent study with supervision
- Written and oral presentation (session 2)

Scope
A Stepping Stone course is equivalent to a total of one week’s full-time study.

Continuation courses
If you already have a basic course in higher education pedagogy and wish to develop your competence, you can choose from our continuation courses. If you wish to gather a total of 10 weeks of higher education pedagogy to apply for a teaching position such as lecturer, course leader, or examiner, you can take five weeks of these continuation courses after your five-week basic course.
A course for those who wish to deepen their knowledge of higher education pedagogy. The course strengthens your competence in educational leadership and supports an evidence-based approach to teaching and learning – both within healthcare and in the higher education sector. Entry requirements: An educational role and approved courses in higher education pedagogy equivalent to at least five weeks.

The course starts in October.
Scope
The course is equivalent to five weeks of full-time study in higher education pedagogy at advanced level.
Language
The language of instruction is Swedish, with the exception of course materials, which are mainly in English.
Formative assessment and feedback
The course aims to support university teachers and supervisors to develop their ability to design and implement formative assessments that support student learning.
The course will next be held in the spring term of 2027.
Registration opens on 15 September 2026.
Scope
The course is equivalent to two weeks of full-time study in higher education pedagogy at an advanced level.
Language
Swedish, but some teaching is conducted in English.
The aim of the course is to raise your awareness of how to design summative assessments to measure student learning. The course also aims to encourage a reflective approach to teaching and learning.

The course starts in October.
Scope
The course is equivalent to two weeks of university study (80 hours) and includes five group sessions.
Language
All lectures and presentations are delivered in English. Discussions and seminars take place in small groups in English.
The course ‘Designing doctoral courses’ focuses on the specific challenges and opportunities associated with doctoral education. The course is aimed at course coordinators responsible for designing doctoral-level courses at Karolinska Institutet.
The course will next be held in the spring term of 2027.

Teaching in the glocal university
This course provides an introduction to the key issues relating to teaching and learning at an international university.

Two2Tango, tandems for teaching in the glocal classroom
The course is aimed at teachers who wish to develop their teaching skills and cultural awareness to teach in a glocal (global + local) classroom in English. The course is designed as a virtual exchange.
The course will next be held in the spring term of 2027.
The course will run from December 2026 to June 2027, with online sessions scheduled once a month.

This course is aimed at those who are responsible for, or involved in, designing courses. During the course, you will develop your ability to design courses based on a goal-oriented framework, with the aim of supporting student learning.

Registration for the autumn term 2026 course is open from 16 March to 17 April.

The course starts on 8 September.
Scope
The course is equivalent to two weeks of higher education (80 hours) and is based on group sessions, preparation for these sessions, independent study and group work.
Language
Swedish, although some teaching may be in English.
Doctoral supervisor courses
The aim of the doctoral supervision training programme at KI is to support and inspire our doctoral supervisors through continous support and development of skills and approaches in teaching and leadership, not only as working academics but on a personal level as well.
Introductory doctoral supervision
The course is compulsory for anyone who is to be registered as the principal supervisor for a doctoral student and has not previously supervised a doctoral student to a Swedish doctoral degree.

Pedagogy for doctoral supervisors
The course in pedagogy for doctoral supervisors is a follow-up to the compulsory introductory course in doctoral supervision and focuses on learning processes and the pedagogy of supervision.
Course dates for autumn 2026
The course starts on 18 September.
Scope
The course comprises five scheduled half-days, plus independent preparation work ahead of these sessions, and is equivalent to two weeks of full-time study.

Leadership for research group leaders
The course is aimed at research group and team leaders who have at least two members in their group and have official responsibility for staff.
Course dates 2027/2028
The course will next start in the autumn term of 2027. Applications will open during the spring term of 2027.

Web course for doctoral supervisors at KI
The course is designed to allow research supervisors and others involved in postgraduate education to update their knowledge of the current regulations governing postgraduate education, as well as providing a tool to ensure legal certainty and quality. The course takes approximately 1–2 hours to complete. Instructions on how to complete the online course can be found in the introduction to the course when you log in. Once you have completed the final test questions in the course, you can print out a certificate and save it as proof that you have completed the online course for research supervisors at KI.

Self-paced online courses
If you are a teacher or involved in education, you can also take a wide range of courses and workshops designed to provide practical support. These online self-study courses do not lead to university credits or count towards teaching qualifications, but they do offer support in your teaching role.
This course is intended to give you a starting point for beginning to work with generative AI. The course provides a basic introduction to generative AI, its possibilities and limitations. The course also covers some legal aspects that regulate the use of AI as well as the ethical aspects surrounding the use of AI.
The course is organized so that it, in addition to guiding you through a course flow, should function as a reference to return to. You should be able to navigate to different modules as needed and desired.

Ethics education at KI
Karolinska Institutet offers education in ethics at several levels: on a basic level, advanced level, doctoral level, and for doctoral supervisors. Quite often ethics education is integrated in the programs and courses, but there are also freestanding ethics courses offered. Learn more about ethics education at KI.
