To apply for promotion from assistant professor to senior lecturer

A career development position as assistant professor provides an opportunity to apply for promotion to senior lecturer. Here we explain the process for promotion applications.

Please note that all assistant professors that were employed prior to November 1, 2024, are required to have completed ten weeks of higher education pedagogy training when applying for promotion, which requires some planning to ensure the courses are completed in time.

For those employed as assistant professors on or after November 1, 2024, an exception regarding the ten-week courses in higher education pedagogy may apply, and the requirement may be fulfilled within two years of employment as a professor; however, this applies only to applications for promotion with a focus on research.

 

Application

As an applicant, you submit your complete application to Academic Appointments (Central Administration/HR Office) via email to academic-appointments@ki.se. Please note that you must submit your application at least 6 months before the employment as Assistant Professor ends.

Assessment process

When applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer, the assessment criteria set out in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that applied when taking up the position as Assistant Professor are applied. For those employed during the period 2018 to October 2024, the published version from February 1st, 2022 should be considered since it is the same requirements and criteria for promotion listed as in the older version from 2018.

The Recruitment Committee prepares and decides in cases regarding the employment of Professors and Senior Lecturers and therefore also prepares applications regarding promotion from employment as Assistant Professor to Senior Lecturer.

To be promoted to Senior Lecturer you must meet all the eligibility requirements for employment as Senior Lecturer. The Recruitment Committee will then make an overall assessment of the assessment criteria for employment as Senior Lecturer. Finally, you must fulfill all the assessment criteria for promotion. 

If you are deemed to meet the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria for promotion to Senior Lecturer stipulated by KI, your application can be assessed by two external reviewers.

Decision

After preparation and approval or disapproval from the Recruitment Committee, the Head of Department makes the decision. 

Promotion to Senior Lecturer means permanent employment as Senior Lecturer.
