Erasmus+ Doctoral Mobility
As a doctoral student, you have many opportunities to gain international experience through Erasmus+ during your doctoral studies. For example, you can collect material for your dissertation, teach, or participate in professional development activities. Erasmus+ gives you a unique opportunity to expand your research possibilities and collaborate internationally, both through studies and traineeships.
Activities within Erasmus+ are eligible for scholarships. The amount of the scholarship depends on the type of activity you undertake and where you go, and it should be seen as a contribution to travel and living expenses.
As an employed doctoral student, you can be considered both a student and staff mobility, and therefore you can apply for scholarships intended for both groups, but not for the same mobility. The type of mobility you should choose depends on the purpose. If you are a doctoral student funded by a scholarship, you can only apply for studies or traineeships.
Erasmus+ Doctoral Mobility: Studies and Traineeships
Erasmus+ Doctoral Mobility for Studies
You can collect data or similar dissertation-preparatory activities at a partner institution. The studies must be full-time at one and the same institution for a continuous period. A bilateral agreement within Erasmus+ is a prerequisite for you to be able to use this opportunity.
Erasmus+ Doctoral Mobility for Traineeships
You can conduct a traineeship at a company, organization, institution, or research and education institution. The traineeship can be carried out during and after the doctoral studies. The content must be relevant to your doctoral studies.
Length of Exchange Period (for Studies or Traineeships) and Compensation Levels
The rules are the same as for mobility at the first cycle and second cycle levels (2-12 months), but doctoral students can also participate in shorter, physical mobilities (5-30 days).
Compensation levels for longer mobilities can be found here:
Erasmus+ for Undergraduate and Advanced Level Students
Compensation for Shorter Mobilities:
- Day 1–14: 79 euros per day.
- Day 15–30: 56 euros per day.
You can also apply for additional funds for green travel (bus or train) and extra inclusion support on the same terms as first cycle and second cycle students.
Please note that if you are employed as a doctoral student, you cannot receive scholarships. The compensation will then be paid to your institution, which is expected to cover, for example, accommodation and travel costs for your mobility.
Employed Doctoral Students
The rules for you as a doctoral student are the same as for teachers and other staff at KI.
Erasmus+ Teacher Exchanges and Staff Training
Teaching (Erasmus+ Teaching Mobility)
Teacher mobility gives you the opportunity to teach at a partner institution.
An Erasmus agreement (“Inter-Institutional Agreement”) with the partner institution you want to visit is required. Contact Kristina Jesinkey (Erasmus Coordinator at KI) to check which agreements are available.
Job Shadowing, Observation Periods, Training, Workshops (Erasmus+ Training Mobility)
Professional development means that you can job shadow at a company, organization, or institution, participate in workshops, or in a shorter, non-credit course. The activity must be related to your job duties.
If you are interested in any of these options, contact Kristina Jesinkey (Erasmus Coordinator at KI) to discuss which option might suit you.
